Re: Can you recommend anywhere? - 15 years ago
We have been coming 30 years, have never stayed at the Diana hotel but chanced upon it one year for cocktails. We now rent a house here and we always go to see Billy at the Diana bar as he is such a friendly person and we have known him so long. We would always recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a good location and friendly owner. Not sure if there is air con though, that may be the only dby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Litter - 15 years ago
I know ! Only the other day some Greeks came to look round an apartment next to ours and mentioned to the landlord that our dog, who was in the sea at the time, would put fleas in the sea ! Nothing mentioned of course of the litter you come across every few hundred yards. Apart from the fact my dog does not have fleas, it shows their concerns to be somewhat fickle. Sometimes, and I say thisby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: MONEY EXCHANGE... - 15 years ago
Don't know Polichrono prices as we live other side. But we visit Hanioti, Kriopigi, Nea Skioni and Siviris a lot. Beers are on average 2.50, frappe 2.50 - 3.00 (1.70 on main road in Pefkochori), sea views cost more ! Giros 2.20 - 2.50, tom and cuc salad 2.50 - 3.50. Bread 60-90 cents depending on what. Fruit and veg at market still good value. Eating out costs more now, try to stick to Greek pby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: MONEY EXCHANGE... - 15 years ago
At the moment the exchange rate is around 1.22 - 1.24. If you use a nationwide UK card it is 1.25 - 1.26. We have been here since March and the rate started at 1.308 and has gone down ever since! It goes up slightly bit I wouldn t bet on getting more than 1.25 this year.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Litter - 15 years ago
AS this topic does not seem to generate much interest, I am bringing it to the top again! Only today I found that the local bar and supermarket have cleared the beach outside their premises. It looks lovely. However, they have cleared all the bottles and crap to just round the corner outside someone elses apartments ! Sometime soon the Greeks have got to start caring about their country.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Pefkohori - 15 years ago
Lots of car hire places about. Kriopigi Cars we have used and they were good. We have also used ones from the airport. You could visit Vergina which is about 3-4 hours away. Brilliant museum built around tomb of Philip of Macedonia and really unique. Locally on Kassandra. Loutra at the end is nice. Go to Villa Stasa for lunch, a Greek taverna with a fantastic view, good prices and portions,by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Can you recommend anywhere? - 15 years ago
Sorry Carole, I dont know anything about the hotels in Hanioti. We did see a lovely looking hotel the other day called Hotel Siviris. I was thinking of recommending that one to family and friends. Hanioti, although I have never stayed there, the Lesse Studios Hotel looks nice too.by Jane - Halkidiki
The Sweet Coffee Shop Kriopigi - 15 years ago
Morfy and Sakis are now open and waiting to see you all again. They now have a balcony at the rear of the shop with wonderful views and their food is just as good as ever. They look forward to seeing you all again this year.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Can you recommend anywhere? - 15 years ago
Perhaps try Kriopigi? Nice little village, set on main road with a village square with a good taverna, Anthoulas. Also lots of tourist type places to eat, as well as Sweet Coffee Shop selling great crepes, home made pizza, salads etc. Casablanca bar for the odd bacon sandwich if you are missing them, and of course a good atmosphere to have a few drinks and chat to Debbie (Welsh) and her husbandby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Alkion & Kriopigi - 15 years ago
philcryan@hotmail.com is an email address I had for this hotel a while ago. Not checked it through again, but try it out. philcryan at hotmail dot com just in case it gets scrambled. Let me know if it works !by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Nationwide cash card NOW in Greece - 15 years ago
Nationwide rate is about 1.26 to 1.27. Does not seem to be going up. Heard today local rates are about 1.18 ! Not very good I am afraid. Bring a bit more than you originally planned to!by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Scuba diving and rubbish - 15 years ago
Well said. I just wish people would take some responsibility. OK it is not our fault if we do not drop the litter, but if only we could take one plastic bag of rubbish away with us, everyone would benefit. There will always be the lazy ones who dump the rubbish, lets show them we are better! I heard from my landlord that a lot of the plastic bags and bottles are dumped overboard by fishermen,by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Transfer Reps - 16 years ago
What sort of documentation would I need? We live here til Oct and one day a week sounds good, but if it means lots of form filling just for the one day, then it would probably not be worth it. Can you perhaps private message me? Thanks. Jane (p.s. been coming over 30 years, so know pretty well Kassandra area).by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti - 16 years ago
Hi, Halkidiki does not have Chavs and drunks as far as I know ! It is more a family holiday place, but lots of young couples come too and there are bars, tavernas and even a few nightclubs (in Kallithea). Beaches in Hanioti are mostly nice and sandy, if a bit busy in July and August. Lots of places to eat, we live on the other side but have eaten at some of the cheap giros places down theby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Litter - 16 years ago
I heard today from locals that they think major culprits are fishermen. I couldnt understand why every day on our beach there are plastic bottles and old nets. They say fishermen just shove them overboard. Not sure if it is true, but we need to get the message across. I also clean our road daily - ouzo bottles, plastic cups, cigarette packets - and those don't come from the fishermen. Whaby Jane - Halkidiki
Litter - 16 years ago
I would like to reiterate what Sakis from the Akropolis has said. Please take your litter home with you, or put in one of the very numerous bins. I know most of you are only on a short holiday and not here long term, but every bit of litter that is put in the proper place makes it nicer for those who visit after you. I clean "my" bit of beach every day. I don't think I should have tby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Studio/Apartment/Villa For Rent - 3 Nights - 16 years ago
We like Greek tavernas, restaurants. But we are quite happy to try something else. Do you have any Thai or Japanese restaurants in Thessaloniki area, or a Japanese steak house? Indonesian must be a bit like Thai, so that could be interesting. LEt us know. I know nothing about buses, sorry. We have a car and drive everywhere. Bye for now Jane in a nice sunny hot Mola Kaliva - we went to Pby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti weather - 16 years ago
Greek TV gave weather for Friday as 24 degrees and sunny in Halkidiki. All the other weather reports seem OK for most of the next week, perhaps one day of cloud and showers. Should be fine. cross fingers....by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti weather - 16 years ago
All the weather reports give different weather. We should have had rain yesterday and it was beautiful and sunny, so don't worry ! Hanioti in the rain, well youcould hire a car and take a look round the rest of the peninsula. Sometimes when it rains here it may be raining in Hanioti and perfectly clear in Nea Skioni........ I am sure you will have a great time. We arrived early March and theby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Studio/Apartment/Villa For Rent - 3 Nights - 16 years ago
OK Kris ! We live in Mola Kaliva which is very quiet too and we prefer the quiet life, but we do get the chance to visit the other side when we feel like it, which is nice. I think we are perhaps looking forward to a bit of life and activity soon, we arrived early March and everything was shut, apart from a few weekend places. Can you recommend anywhere in Thessaloniki. We can only go durinby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Studio/Apartment/Villa For Rent - 3 Nights - 16 years ago
If you had gone to Kriopigi you would not need a car as most places are now open! Nothing much open the end you are staying, not yet anyway.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Sithonia - 16 years ago
Not really Niko. She stayed in Kassandra Palace last year, and before in Pallini. She preferred the low rise of Kassandra Palace, so something similar. We particularly like Vourvourou, so I dont know if there is anything there. Or Nea Marmaras. It will only be for a week, they stay with us for two weeks first. Any suggestions welcome.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Sithonia - 16 years ago
I know Beppe, but you try to tell my sister that. It is best to let her get on with sorting something out herself I think ! But I have tried to tell her, we stayed there and it was great and that was before it was refurbished. Ciao, hope to see you over here some time. I forwarded your ad to the appropriate forum for Mr Athos. Will let you know what happens. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: holiday in Pefkohori - 16 years ago
It is not red hot at the moment! We have our worst day since we arrived in early March yesterday. Rain and 14 deg. Today is warmer, about 18 deg and it is forecast to go up by end of week to about 23. End of May however, the weather should have picked up nicely.by Jane - Halkidiki
Sithonia - 16 years ago
My sister is visiting us in Mola Kaliva, Kassandra end July/mid August. She wants to spend two weeks with us, followed by a week in a hotel in SIthonia. Although I know Sithonia as far as beaches and days out, I have never stayed anywhere other than the Meliton Beach. She thinks that is too big and wants a smaller type hotel, similar probably to the Kassandra Palace in Kriopigi where she staby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Studio/Apartment/Villa For Rent - 3 Nights - 16 years ago
If you click on the location map it shows you. It is near the top of the peninsula. As you are coming 1st May I would say it would be a bit too quiet there as things are only just starting to open up further down. Depends what you want really.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: sunshine and scuba diving - 16 years ago
And we had a horrible day here on Kassandra, rain and cold, 13deg. Hopefully it will get warmer from tomorrow again.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: taxi - 16 years ago
This may well be going up, the prices of fuel in Greece are now the highest we have ever known. Diesel, which most taxis use is around 1 euro 25 cents as against 99cents last year and 1 euro 8 cents when we arrived six weeks ago.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Cashpoints? - 16 years ago
One near the square, one on the road down to the square and one outside Masoutis supermarket, plus various others I am sure.by Jane - Halkidiki
