General discussion and questions about Halkidiki.
Re: fourka - 15 years ago
Although we cannot come over for 7 months like last year, we are coming over for ten days. Thanks to our Greek friends who are putting us up in their home, and the fact that we kept the remainder of our euros from last year, we are able to come. We know the bond with friends in Greece very well, it keeps you going back time and time again. We still hope to do the half year thing again sometiby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti - 15 years ago
And, thank goodness it is no IBIZA !! Halkidiki is a lovely area and can cater for all sorts of age groups. I think it is good that it has stayed pretty good because you don't get lager louts or large groups of youngsters drinking, mainly because of the set up. There are discos (out of town mainly, on the road into Kallithea) and hotels and clubs have discos, there are also lots of places to eaby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti & Hilltop Hotel - 15 years ago
Miss Sunshine, the weather in Halkidiki is usually glorious, and it can be hotter than Crete in the summer ! Last year from April til mid September it was glorious. Sometimes June July and August was too hot! We had quite a lot of wind last year June and July, but that helped keep you cooler. Unfortunately last year was the first time ever in all our years of going that the last two weeks of Sby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather in May please!!!! - 15 years ago
It really depends on whether you will have your own transport. Sani area is beautiful, but it is also fairly isolated. There are a few bars but they are part of the Sani complex, so there is no small village as such to walk round and try different tavernas. If it were me I would have a car and would go HB, but if you are quite happy to relax for your holiday and not bother driving about (althouby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Just got back from Kriopigi - 15 years ago
The Alkion is a very nice hotel, a short walk up to the village on the main road, but a long walk or ride down the hill to the beach. It has nice gardens and swimming pool. Last year there was no ATM and I don't think that will have changed. There is one in Kallithea, Hanioti for sure. July should be beautiful. We were there March til Oct last year and from May onwards til mid September itby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Halkidiki Holidays who's will be there ? - 15 years ago
Rosemary, you could always try the "local" places where beers and drinks are much cheaper than the tourist bars etc. In Nea Skioni we paid 2 euros for a large Amstel, 2.5 euros for a bacardi or gin with mixer. In Pefkochori there are local shops selling drinks much the same price, they are not the prettiest of places in tourist terms, but the locals drink there and it is much more aby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: blue waters, white sands and great beach for 2 year old (any ideas please) - 15 years ago
Hi, I would say try Vourvourou. Lovely beaches, shallow clear water and a nice little village. A bit out of the way, but you can always have a trip out to Marmaras one day to do touristy things (with a Greek twist, it is not a terribly touristy town). If you want the main tourist area with lots to do, then Kassandra peninsula, and I would probably try for a hotel like Agean Melathron or Kassby Jane - Halkidiki

Saki, Happy New Year. Can you give me a price for a car to be picked up at SKG 13 May 12 noon and returned to SKG on 22 May at 0900 please. Not the smallest as we are not that small ! Just to give us an idea if we can afford to book flights etc. Thanks. Janeand Martynby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: for change, greek from halkidiki needs advice to visit UK - 15 years ago
Hi, try Derbyshire. About 2 hrs from London by train. You have lots of lovely countryside to explore, pubs and hotels in lovely countryside areas and lots of English Stately Homes - Chatsworth House, Kedleston Hall, and more (can't recall all names at the moment !). Then onto Yorkshire. West Yorkshire Haworth, Bronte Country, with lots of history. North Yorkshire for the moors and beautiful coby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather in May please!!!! - 15 years ago
I think Michael that these days it is impossible to predict accurately anywhere in the world. For example this year it was glorious from May through to mid September, then we got two really cold wet and cloudy weeks. Just as we left beginning Oct it went back to sunshine and warm, even hot, weather again! All I would say is that after many many years of visiting and living there May is usually wby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: E-news on Halkidiki? - 15 years ago
That is a bit "ostrich" like though Jim. Don't you think that it is better to know and try to improve some things. I don't know what shocked you, for me it is the animals. But I would rather know and try to help than look through rose tinted spectacles. Things must change, not just in Greece, but all over the world, and the shame is that tourists are often sheltered from the truths.by Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Beware the "other" forum - 15 years ago
Yes Rosemary, it is ! Funny thing is my husband works in IT and IF I wanted to I could easily log in again. But why bother, this forum is much better and I can rely on seeing the truth posted by people without it being censored or removed for whatever reason.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Casablanca Bar - 15 years ago
Hi Debbie, did you get my last email with some pics of your favourite Mascot? Let me know, if not I will send again. We would take this opportunity to all those reading this message to recommend they visit Casablanca for a warm and friendly welcome, and two of the best hosts ever. We will be back in the not too distant future I am sure.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: The ugly side of Greece - 15 years ago
Hi Thomas, I too know many people in Halkidiki who take care of their dogs. I also know that strays can get dangerous when they get into packs but to be honest I have only ever encountered one problem with a pack of dogs and that was ten years ago. Most strays are so grateful for a bit of food or fuss, and they are not dangerous at all. I was very careful this time in Greece as I had my ownby Jane - Halkidiki

I assume you are asking Figaro. However in my case I joined to join in. Unfortunately if you don't agree 100 per cent with the site owner then your posts are removed. So why would I want to use it anymore, apart from being banned in any case? I agree forums are only as good as their posters, but something has to be good about the way the forum is run or people will join and then be disallusioby Jane - Halkidiki
Beware the "other" forum - 15 years ago
If you want to see an unbiased opinion and to be able to express your own opinion on any aspect of the other site, the services advertised etc., then do not bother to join the other forum. Because I posted something slightly against one of the services (flight information) my post was removed. I reposted it and then received an email saying that this sort of comment was not helpful. The ugly side of Greece - 15 years ago
Oh how I wish I had not been aware of either of the two incidents. On my last day in Halkidiki, after being there since March, I took my dog for a walk along the beach near Skioni. She had a swim and all was great until I walked back towards our rented house. Halfway along I saw a plastic bag at the edge of the sea with the handles tied. Curious, I looked inside and found a dead puppy, aboutby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: E-news on Halkidiki? - 15 years ago
I agree, but if you did not know, the Athens News is under threat of closure or indeed if the appeals didnt work then it is closed already. I also think it would be good to see all sides of Halkidiki. See my other post on animals. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather - 15 years ago
Today lovely and warm in Skioni area. 23 deg and blue sky all day, just a few clouds here and there. In the sun it felt extremely warm and pleasant. Cross fingers it will be on the up now.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather - 15 years ago
Still chilly today. Went to Skioni and had lunch and it bucketed it down for two hours. Got home (3 km away) and no rain had reached us, and never did. We actually got some sun. Reason for posting this, well it may be raining in one part of Kassandra but just a very few KM away it can be OK. Hoping for some sun before we leave eventually. Had a great summer but a shame our last few weeks haby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather!!! - 15 years ago
Hi Lisa. Well the weather forecast for Kassandra says it is improving from Monday, but to be honest they seem to change it every few hours ! I must say in the many years we have been in Halkidiki, and talking to some locals in Skioni today, this is the first time that the weather has been continuously cloudy cold and raining. Usually at this time of year you can expect a day or so sometimes whby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Taverna's in Hanioti? - 15 years ago
Usually places start to close second week in Oct. Not sure why they are all so early this year, maybe because it has not been that busy, certainly not as busy as previous years. Places are still open in the less/non tourist Greek villages like Skioni, Kalandra, Fourka village etc.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather!!! - 15 years ago
Ah yes, but if you were here longer like us you would have had super hot dry weather with no rain right from end of May til then ! Whereas in England you would probably have got drowned most of the time. You never can tell..... October may yet be very nice, shame we are leaving early Oct.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: kefolatiri cheese - 15 years ago
Yes it is, it is gorgeous. You can buy it at the market too, and just fry in a non stick pan, no oil needed. We are always buying it ! There is also haloumi, but that is a bit more squeaky and rubbery. Kefalotiri is nice and soft, but you need to eat it quickly, no problem there......by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices in Hanioti - 15 years ago
We don't live in Hanioti, but prices around the peninsula are not so bad if you go Greek. At our local bar in Skioni Barcardi is 5 euros but it is more of a triple measure if not more and you get coke up to the top in the local Greek bar. Beers in the bar however are dearer than drinking beer in a taverna or snack bar. Amstel, Mythos is generally 2 - 2 1/2euros except in CAFE BARS, these seem toby Jane - Halkidiki
