Re: weather - 16 years ago
The weather at the moment is around 24 deg C and sunny. Misty start to the day but it soon clears. There is a cool wind, so no swimming in the sea! We are on Kassandra, but the weather is very similar to Sithonia. In fact sometimes Sithonia is a bit warmer. Forecast is set to be good, mid 20's and sunshine with a few clouds. Forecast rain for this Friday, Good Friday, but forecasts are veryby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Wanted Long term house to rent not for holiday - 16 years ago
Lesley, I sent Jane some info but didn't get any reply. She may have found something herself and can let you know about it? I will send some more links when I get time later today hopefully. Jane Cby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Villa recommendation? - 16 years ago
Lesley here is one I found on the internet. Hope it comes through as usually if a link is put in it won't work for some reason. There are others, email me privately and I will try to find some more links. I cannot recommend any personally as we live here long term and rent on a yearly basis, so I dont know much about short term rentals. wwwdotownersdirectdotcodotukslashgreeceslashGR36doby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: first time to Greece/Hanioti - 16 years ago
Best idea would be to open a Nationwide flex account. You can draw money over here and they give you the business rate, not the tourist one. As the rate is so low it would be better. We live over here 7 months but we always use this card. I do know one place in Hanioti that changes gbp and travellers cheques. There may be more, we dont actually live that side, but I thought you might be wanby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti - 16 years ago
Hi Lene Sorry, we just have been coming here for 30 years so know most of the places in Halkidiki on an overall basis. We know beaches, places to eat, friendly supermarkets etc. We actually live the other side in Mola Kaliva. I do perhaps know someone who wants staff in Kriopigi but not sure if you need to speak Greek. I am sure you will find work, but perhaps someone else on the forumby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: which hotel is best? - 16 years ago
Not been to either, but the Sani area is very beautiful and you are nearer to other tourist and Greek towns. Both hotels are out of town, so transport is needed to visit other areas. We often go to Sani area to visit the beaches (although over the last ten years the hotels have taken hold of the best bits we used to like!)by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti - 16 years ago
Yes I think it is. You don't get lager louts or chavs over here, not from what we have seen over 30 years anyway. You get kids everywhere in Greece and in August it will be very busy as all the Greeks come over from Thessaloniki too. Hanioti is basically a tourist village. There are lots of bars, lots of places to eat and the beach is within walking distance of almost every hotel. It is niceby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: exchange rate.... - 16 years ago
The rate is totally rubbish over here too. I am with Nationwide which gives the best rate using cashpoints and at the moment it is 1.24 to the pound. My rent this year is costing another £500+. Hopefully by September it may get better for you, too late for us and our yearly rent though !by Jane - Halkidiki

Hi, did you find a home for that dog? We are back over here now til October, so we may call into Billys bar one Sunday for the quiz and to meet you. Jane and Martynby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: kriopigi - 16 years ago
Kriopigi is a smallish village, set on the main road. It is a long way down to the beach, but there are lots of good places to eat and drink on the main road. Also a nice taverna called Anthoulas in the old square up on the hill. Although the beach is a long way, your hotel has a pool and there is also a little train that takes people down to the beach and back in season. I don't know whatby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: weather - 16 years ago
Hello again. We have not stayed in Polichrono, but from the reports on this forum it is a nice place to stay. We have been coming for 30 years and we started off at the Pallini Beach for fifteen years, then we tried Siviris which is very nice but now you can only book direct at the UK tour operators pulled out, again.... Then we lived here for three summers til 2001, then we stayed in friends apaby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: weather - 16 years ago
We arrived 11 March and the weather has been lovely, around 18 deg first week and sunny, but the last week has been a bit colder at 13, and yesterday was the worse day ever, rained all day and got up to about 11. However, we are forecast from tomorrow to get higher temperatures, up to mid/late twenties with sun. It started with rain this morning and afternoon, and by 4pm got up to 18 with sunby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: reliable & cheap car hire - 16 years ago
Kriopigi cars is supposed to be very good, our family have used them. They deliver to airport, so no reason why they wouldnt deliver to Pefkohori.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Guide books/what to do - 16 years ago
Calypso, where will you be staying? It seems like Pefkohori from your other posts. I do not know a lot about Pefkohori, but can certainly tell you what is around the peninsula. I will copy you on my previous pm to another poster, check your private messages for the info. Anything else you think I can help with, just send me a pm (it saves cluttering the forum board up with repeat messages) Regby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: easyjet flights - 16 years ago
Hi Kerry You had better reckon on needing a bit more spends though, the exchange rate is cr.p at the moment. No sign of it getting to last years levels, yet............. Hope to see you at Casablanca, we were there yesterday as they opened up at the weekend. When are you coming? Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: late sugust weather?? - 16 years ago
Last year August was extremely hot and this continued all through the night. I can remember well as my sister was visiting us and we had to have the air con on full blast right til end of August. Usually cooler evenings arrive in September. We are here in our 30th year of visiting, and currently are renting a house for three years til 2009/2010. However, do remember, the weather is not guarby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Simantro Beach Hotel - 16 years ago
I echo Pedro, it is very remote. Although we have never stayed there, we have been out of season to the beach to collect shells! It looks a very nice beach, shallow water and safe. However, there is nothing else around. So unless you want a chilled out stay at the hotel holiday, then you may need to hire a car. I would suggest hiring a car anyway, it would be a shame to miss out on visiting otby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: easyjet flights - 16 years ago
Hi Shoey We take it easy as we have a dog with us too. We leave from Midlands and drive to Folkestone, get channel tunnel over and drive on a bit, this time to Arras. Next stop Strasbourg, followed by Parma. Boat leaves from Ancona (we used to go from Venice but their boats do not allow dogs in cabins and I want our dog with us - she loves water too much to trust her to kennels on deck !).by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: exchange rate.... - 16 years ago
We are getting more here using our Nationwide card than we did in the UK when we bought a few euros prior to travelling over. It goes up and down at the moment,\but I am sure by May it should be better. In UK we got 1.20, after haggling 1.26 but they then "did" us on the Swiss Francs, so we were no better off! Here it started at 1.309 and has fluctuated up and down but no lower thanby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: easyjet flights - 16 years ago
No, we are over here, by car. But looked for my sister for August and not too bad, but not much cheaper than BA as they now charge for hold luggage. Not as cheap as to Athens, but I suppose if you book early enough and not for a really busy time it may be OK. Weather, has been lovely since we got here 14th March. Today was 24 deg and warm wind, but we are in for some rough windy and cold, weby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Nationwide cash card NOW in Greece - 16 years ago
Thanks Metaxa. We did that when we lived here before, but to be honest it was a load of hassle as if we forgot our passport we could not draw the money out even though we had our book, the banks go on strike (as now !) and all in all we found the nationwide card to be a good option. Anyway, we are now here. Strike is on, but cashpoints, at the moment anyway, have money in them. The rate in UKby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: jane - 16 years ago
Hi Danielle I think the exchange rate in the UK is bound to be worse than over Europe, I mean everything normally costs more here in good old Rip Off Britain ! Anyway I am going to draw the money on the way over and when I get to Greece. I am sure our landlord will wait a week or two for the full amount, we are only in our second year of three!! We go UK to Calais via the tunnel, then fiby Jane - Halkidiki

Hi Jeff. We set off on Sunday 9 March, getting into Halk on Fri 14th. We are there til October this year. Are you coming over after your wedding, or will it be next year. At the mo it looks like the weather has been lovely after the snow, around 22-24 deg C. Lets hope it continues til and after we get there ! Keep in touch, we look forward to hearing from you.
