Re: Animal Welfare or FUR SHOPS - 9 years ago
Hmm, rubbish. Synthetic materials can be just as warm, if not warmer. As for not skinned alive? really? I am not sure where you are from, but having adopted a dog from Romania, which is absolute hell for animals which are knifed, shot, beaten, clubbed to death, why on earth would Eastern Europeans then shoot to be kind and obtain fur coats? What about the fur farms up in Northern Greece visited wby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 9 years ago
Make sure your dogs passport and vaccinations are all up to date and well in date, there should be no problems, but recently they introduced TRACES which makes it more difficult to bring dogs over from Greece to new homes unless from a TRACES registered premises. This should not affect private pets, and UK dogs which have a UK passport though, but make sure chip works properly etc.because there aby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: A Week in Kriopigi - Spending Money - 11 years ago
We went to Petralona caves by car, it was cheap to get in, and we tagged onto the end of a tour group, unfortunately all in German. But you don't need to hear, you can get a guide book and see for yourself. Another brilliant thing to do is visit Vergina, the tomb of Alexander the Great, about two hours from Kriopigi. Well worth it, fantastic museum set in an earth mound.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Testudinata Turtles - 11 years ago
There are some turtles up in the hills behind Polichrono. Not sure how it is now, when we saw them it was all natural and unfenced, then the council put fencing up, and we have not been up there for at least five years now.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Rubbish and Litter - 11 years ago
I agree wholeheartedly, we visited in June and the situation past Hanioti was dreadful. They are suffering a lot with cut backs and it seems rubbish is the first one to be cut, which is ridiculous when you think of the high population during the summer months. I would encourage anyone to write to the local Mayors and the Tourist Boards, but I would request you do not dwell on stray dogs and caby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Sweet Coffee Shop - Kriopigi - 11 years ago
Tasha, I have sent you a pm, we can of course help with many suggestions as we have lived there long term and visited over a period of many years. Rather than take up all the forum, you can send me your particular questions and we will do our best to offer some good suggestions, and perhaps a little insight to some of the less touristy options.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Sweet Coffee Shop - Kriopigi - 11 years ago
Hi, the Sweet coffee Shop is now called the Bistro. SAME PLACE, SAME OWNERS. It is on the main road on the left hand side going towards Hanioti. Opposite the Pharmacy and just before the periptero (kiosk). It used to operate with tables all on the front, roadside. But that section is now closed and it has been extended. You go in the far entrance (well signed with menu board) and you can eitheby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Πληροφορίες Για Χαλκιδική - 11 years ago
Have to say best beaches for swimming are generally on Sithonia (Vourvourous is beautiful). However, Kassandra has more to do and villages not so spread out. Sani Beach is beautiful, sandy and shallow. The beaches around Kallithea and Kriopigi are also sandy, and safe. Personally I prefer the beaches on the other side, at Mola Kaliva (quite pebbly) and Possidi (a mix of sandy beaches and pebbly)by Jane - Halkidiki
NEW SEASON new crimes - 11 years ago
Yet again we have poison in Halkidiki. Four dogs in Fourka poisoned last night, died horrific deaths. Julie from Halkidiki Animal Rescue called out at 2130, one dead, one dying and she tried in vain to save the third. Another found dead on way to police station. Police and Mayor called, NOT INTERESTED. Vet has taken samples to find out type of poison, and this will be followed up. SO WHY DO Iby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Thomson Holidays - 12 years ago
I am finding that cheap flights are difficult to find, and the best are in conjunction with hotel offers. The only trouble I can see here is that the airline (usually Ryanair, Easyjet) gets quite high fares for the trip and yet again the poor hotel owners suffer with low prices. Because if the hotel aspect of the booking is so cheap, you can bet they don't get half of that. We would prefer to visby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Prices - 12 years ago
Fuel prices a bit more expensive, I would say that is an understatement, fuel is extortionately priced, I wonder how the Greeks manage to carry on their normal day to day activities. We have just been to Crete, we got a deal we could not miss, but we were amazed to find that prices there for food and drinks was much cheaper than Halkidiki. We used to drink frappe in various places in Halkidikiby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 12 years ago
MarkMag, are you having a Giraffe? A leisurely drive to Greece for a holiday, with a maximum of ten days total, is to my mind impossible, never mind expensive. Unless you are planning on driving for a solid 24 hours, and that would be going through the Balkan countries which are not considered safe, it is impossible to combine leisurely drives with a holiday in the middle all in ten days. Re: Is Villa Stassi restaurant still open? - 12 years ago
I think you have copied in information I sent to you ...... I am guessing so. Anyway, Villa Stasa was still open last year. It has been completely refurbished in 2010 when we lived there, and it is fantastic, more so than ever. You can now sit out on a proper balcony over looking the sea. Unfortunately Papoos (the one with the dodgy eye) died in 2010, but Stelios his son has taken over and the reby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: baby biddy/ stray dog - 12 years ago
Hi, well for a start from January 1st she can come straight over, takes about 2-3 weeks I think for the innoculations etc. as the passport laws are changing. Julie at Halkidiki Animal Rescue (if you are on facebook you can join the page) knows the information on what you will have to do and how to do it. Are you there until March and then coming back to UK? Or, is someone looking after herby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Animal abuse in Greece - 12 years ago
Diane, are you on facebook? If so I can invite you to join our group which is fighting for change in Greece. The catalyst for this was a poor dog burnt alive whilst giving birth near Athens. This has proved to be a real turning point, we even got a letter published in the Athens News last week. So many members in just the few months since it happened (August), this group is to get justice for thiby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: prices in greece at the mo x - 12 years ago
I agree Steve, people must be aware that it is going to cost them more than before, otherwise it would ruin their holiday. I personally think 100 euros a day for a couple is damned expensive, we don't spend that when we tour the USA. It is still a beautiful place, but with prices like this, then people must know beforehand and make a judgement. We ate at local Greek places mostly Skioni waby Jane - Halkidiki

Sheena, enjoy. Of course we don't want to put you off, but I have also lived there for many years only returning back to UK last year, so I do know what I am talking about, I should do after 35 years of visiting ! Carolinus, I would hate for someone to go and come back complaining that we had not told the whole truth. Prices are certainly NOT the same as from three years ago, and we have actuby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: prices in greece at the mo x - 12 years ago
Marios is now working in their Moudanea Zytheon. We only went once last year to Hanioti one even though we were there all year, it was just so expensive and not the same without Marios. But Menia was coping OK, probably because she was busy, but she is closing Hanioti one and leaving Marios and his wife to carry on with the Moudanea one, another part of Halkidiki changed forever. Re: prices in greece at the mo x - 12 years ago
Wish we could have eaten well on 50 euros a day together with petrol and drinking out! And we ate at locals places not tourist places. You have to be realistic and advise people of the truth, rose tinted spectacles are OK but are of no help once you are there and find your money disappearing into a black hole. Prices are up from last year. Even the humble salad has gone up in price. Fruit aby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Animal poisonings. - 12 years ago
Hi If you want to pm me I can give you various links on facebook of people fighting hard for the animals of Greece. I too am disgusted at the continuing lack of interest or care for the animals of Greece, and to be honest it seems to be getting worse. A mixture of a change in the sort of tourists and the economy but as always the animals seem to suffer.by Jane - Halkidiki
Animal Welfare or FUR SHOPS - 12 years ago
This is the first of my reports on our recent visit a few weeks ago. As many of you know we have lived in Halkidiki on and off for the last twelve years, returning to the UK for good last October. Before that we visited for many years. So we have seen Halkidiki from the very beginning of its tourism. Places change, and that is to be expected. Some things get better, a lot get worse. Re: Medusa Hotel Kriopigi - 12 years ago
I was there last two weeks, the weather was indeed beautiful except for one day. However, the prices were a real shock to me. Having lived there over the last few years, only leaving last October, I found the price of food in supermarkets and fuel was astronomical, much more than last year. If you eat out the price is not bad, but you really need to find non tourist tavernas to get the besby Jane - Halkidiki
Coming back again soon, but only for a short time - 13 years ago
Knew we wouldnt last a year! We are coming back for a while in September, just a holiday. Miss all our Greek friends, the Greek food, the Greek weather (has not been so good in UK this month) and of course my Greek doggie friends, although one poor boy Vangellis got poisoned not many months after we left, poor Vangellis.
