General discussion and questions about Halkidiki.
items required for next March - 14 years ago
Hi everyone We are looking for a few household items for our house in Greece next year. We need a two seater sofa, or three possible. A fridge freezer, or we would consider just a fridge. Canvas garden chairs. We would also consider a AC unit, portable, if cheap enough. Many thanks. You can reply on here or pm me if you have any information.by Jane - Halkidiki

Thanks Mark and Kelly, we are off on Monday and can't wait ! Will let you know if we see anything of interest on our travels around. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: NewAll-Inclusive Hotel in Hanioti - 14 years ago
I think with the euro exchange and Greece becoming more expensive, the most likely people who would go AI are those with kids. I can imagine (I have no kids !) that constant pestering for drinks and snacks by kids could eat away into holiday spends so quickly, whereas AI would all be paid up front. I too hope no more AI appear. Perhaps SOME tourist places need to look more at their pricing, iby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: NewAll-Inclusive Hotel in Hanioti - 14 years ago
I don't like to see all inclusive in places like Halkidiki. There are so many small tavernas and restaurants, and cafes that depend on tourists and are much more authentic to Greece. I can only say what happened near the Pallini Beach. For years Pallini and Athos (1980 onwards in our experience) both were run for English and German tourists and were b and b or full board, but you had a choice.by Jane - Halkidiki
Is anyone driving over next year that can take a motorbike ? - 14 years ago
Just a long shot really. Wonder if anyone is driving over next year with a trailer or van that could take a large motor scooter over for us? We would obviously be willing to pay you a reasonable fee. We do not have a trailer or tow bar, and at the moment are planning to ship it over, but the quote is quite high. Just a shot in the dark ............................. but if you can help, pby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather?! - 14 years ago
How long are you there for Alanapp? We arrive 28th for 6 nights, basically to sort out our rental house for next two years, although hoping for some nice weather, Greek salads and sardines, and beach relaxing (sea might be a bit cold tho!).by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather?! - 14 years ago
try www.meteo.gr. You can see longer range forecast in Greek, but if you don't read Greek then hit the English flag and you get about a four day forecast. Choose Makedonia, then Kassandra. It is usually quite accurate. Above all, don't worry. Nowhere in the world is consistent with their weather nowadays, but in our 8 months over there last year we only had a few nights rain March to Sept,by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: restaurants - 14 years ago
Always seems a shame to me that people don't try enough of the local foods where they go on holiday. For me, and it is a personal thing, I look forward to eating the food of the country I am visiting. Another point is that I have heard from other holidaymakers that the interpretation of Indian, Chinese whatever dishes abroad is never the same as what we are used to in the UK anyway.by Jane - Halkidiki

Millychip, sorry to hear you won't return to Halkidiki, what was the problem?by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: restaurants - 14 years ago
Will you have a hire car, bike or be using the bus, there are loads of nice Greek restaurants a bit further afield. Sorry I know nothing of Polichrono restaurants though.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: england world cup qualifier - 14 years ago
Go to Casablanca in Kriopigi, they have all the matches on and Debbie and Antony are super people. They have good offers on beer etc., and some decent snacks too.by Jane - Halkidiki

Are you still looking at Kriopigi, Pefkohori, polichrono or Hanioti? Or anywhere else.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: supermarkets - 14 years ago
I don't know where the Sarantis apartments are but you will find many small supermarkets, more like grocery stores, all around the tourist areas as well as in the non tourist villages. There is a big Massoutis which is more like what you would probably call a supermarket, selling most things, in Hanioti on the main road and also one in Kallithea as you enter the village on the main road. Re: Household items wanted for 2010 April - 14 years ago
Hi Phil OK, we have looked on line at IKEA beds and seen one that seems to be OK. I suppose the base is in bits too, so we may be ok with our 4x4 if the mattress rolls up too? Anyway, we will plan to go to Thess first day and sort it all out Thanks for your replyby Jane - Halkidiki
Household items wanted for 2010 April - 14 years ago
Hi everyone We are coming over for two years again from April 2010. We are looking for, amongst other things, a large double bed in good condition, bedside table, 2 Canvas garden chairs, lazyboy chair, dvd player, bbq, front loading washing machine. Anybody who is selling up, or moving and has any of these items for sale early next year or anything else that we might find helpful please emby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: boat hire - 14 years ago
Hi Alan, no we are doing another two years summer rental from next year. Can't quite make the total break from UK, we need to keep a place here and we prefer to know we can come back if we really need to, having had problems and hospital treatment in the past in Greece, the first time quite serious. As we can't afford to keep a place here and buy one over there (unless we win the lottery of cby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: boat hire - 14 years ago
Pefkochori had boats to rent, quite expensive though. Be careful the sea is not always as calm as it seems. Have a great time. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: To buy or rent - 14 years ago
Rent, definitely. There are so many places to buy in Halkidiki now if you needed to return to the UK, for example for health reasons, you would find it difficult to sell up. The house we are renting next year for two years has already been on the market for over three years. \we have been renting long term on and off for the past 12 years. Make sure you get a rental agreement in English,by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Things to do in and around Hanioti/Pefkohori/Polychrono - 14 years ago
We have know Billy the owner for many years. Although we have not stayed there, as we rent long term for six months or so, we did look round his newly furbished rooms last year and they were fine. He is very friendly and we often go there for a drink and to see his mum and dad. The beach is a couple of mins walk and the hotel is on a quiet street away from the main road. I think you will be verby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather forecast. - 14 years ago
try www.meteo.gr. These is also an English tab to click, but that is not so long term. OK so it does look a bit bad at the moment, but it rarely is that bad ALL day. Sometimes the forecast rain comes in the night or early morning and it is clear by lunch. I really would not worry that much. We have never had really continual bad weather, and last year we arrived in March and left in Oct.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Pefkohori & Surrounds - Hire car or not? - 14 years ago
Definitely get a car. There are lots of nice places to see. There is like Joanne said Afitos and Paliori, but there is also the old village of Agia Paraskevi (which has a taverna and coffee bar, and not touristy at all). Also nice is Nea Skioni which is where we live near when over there, a nice fishing village with mainly Greek tourists but some nice local Kafenion to eat and drink at cheaplyby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather - 14 years ago
try looking at www.meteo.gr. It is available for a few days worth of forecasts in English. You need to hit the Makedonia, then Kassandra region. I have just looked at the forecast but it is currently being updated so only a few days worth to see. It does say rain on Thursday, but I shouldnt worry too much. If it rains it usually clear up quickly, and if you are unlucky enough to get a whole daby Jane - Halkidiki
Fire in Halkidiki? - 14 years ago
Just read Kathimerini on line and see there are fires in Corfu and Halkidiki? Anybody got any news on where the fires in Halkidiki are? I know it is a large place, but I would like to know more. Thanks. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Things to do in and around Hanioti/Pefkohori/Polychrono - 14 years ago
Sakis at Kriopigi cars has great reasonably priced cars and he will meet you at the airport with one, or bring you back to Kriopigi (a few miles before you get to Pefkochori). The drive is easy, just beware Greek drivers who under and over take ! The drive takes about one hour. The coach I have heard takes about 2-21/2 depending where it stops. There are also taxis, I think about 80 eurosby Jane - Halkidiki

"the beaches was clean and the weather was hot thats about the best of greece next year were going back to majorca were there is much more life" Tom and Jane, thats why lots of people like Greece, because it is quiet with clean beaches and good weather and incidentally some really good food ! I can't think I even think about buying corned beef in Greece - I don't buy it much in thby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Cheapest flights in late august - 14 years ago
We were told to try Swiss Air from EM, changing at change at Geneva. Apparently there are some good cheap flights available and the 1 hour wait at Geneva would certainly be less than the travel to LGW (we live in Derbyshire and went from LGW in May, the return journey on the M1 took away all the benefits of our holiday !!)by Jane - Halkidiki
Janet Wallce re wedding reception - 14 years ago
Hi Janet, just some more ideas. Have you tried contacting Sakis at the Acropolis in Kriopigi re your reception - he does a great Greek night and am sure would be able to do something Greek themed.? There is also the Sweet Coffee Shop in Kriopigi that does after wedding do's, they do both Pasta, Pizza, Sandwiches, Burgers, Crepes etc. Not sure if Casablanca in Kriopigi do them, but worby Jane - Halkidiki
