Re: Hi all - 16 years ago
Yes, 'fraid so ! It isnt usually plagued so much as they are about. Worst time is early evening. We found when we have a shower and then sit outside to dry off for a while that is when we were getting bitten the most. You can buy Johnsons OFF at local supermarkets and you can spray this on yourself, your sheets etc. It does work and is not expensive. Some places appear worse than others. Wby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hi all - 17 years ago
Haven't stayed in Hanioti, but having been going to Halkidiki for 30 years, here goes. Hanioti itself. The BeerHouse, Zytheon, is very good if you like to try different beers. Also sells cocktails, food, soft drinks etc. Very friendly owners and staff. Just down from there on the corner opposite the market Gustos Italian Pizza, we had a very good pizza here in March this year. On the otherby Jane - Halkidiki

Hi Saki, oh well not far out in my directions I suppose. Never been to Lidl, just seen it .by Jane - Halkidiki

Just outside Kallithea. Between Kallithea and Afitos to be precise.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanoiti - 17 years ago
I agree with Jeff, book with local tour companies. We no longer do tours as we have been going for thirty years, but when family and friends come over and go on tours we book through local companies. There is an English speaking guide on most, just enquire first. And they do have insurance, at least the ones we have used do.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: whats the transfer like from the airport to polichrono - 17 years ago
Hi, been many many years since we did a transfer but our family came to visit and think it usually takes between one and a half and two hours depending on where you are staying. Polichrono is probably about 1 1/2 hrs depending where they drop off first. The roads used to be windy and through small villages 30 years ago. Now it is mainly dual carriageway until you get near the peninsula. Notby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: HELP!!!!! - 17 years ago
So there you are Kerry ! Did you get my email? Thought you were staying at Debs? I know places to stay, but they are all on the other side of the peninsula so not much use for you. Sorry. Sure you will find somewhere. Email me if you get time. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: fourka - 17 years ago
Buster, there have been dogs poisoned since Nov. I visited Julie over Easter and she showed me four dogs she had saved. Phil I agree, please everyone who reads this who loves dogs contribute to the collection tins. Although I totally disagree with poisoning the dogs, after all it is not their fault they are alive, it is the person who dumped the parents/grandparents in the first place. Aby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Places to avoid and places highly recommended - 17 years ago
HI Jeff, the petrol station up from Cyclon used to be run by Julies husband. This one is entirely seperate. Been to 24 hour gyros place in Fourka, yes it was very good. We went to the taverna on the corner, opposite the grass square, for pizza many times and it was good. However our friends in Kriopigi now do the best pizza about we think ! Will try some of the others, promise. Certainlyby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Sweet Coffee Shop (Kriopigi) - 17 years ago
You bet I will ! Have just been over for three weeks for Easter. Yes, Morfy and Sakis are running the Sweet Coffee Shop. In fact they are extending their menus and we helped them decide on their blackboard sign. I think they decided they would be opening for breakfast lunch and dinner (all light meals as you know, but really nice). If they go ahead with their thoughts they will be doing low faby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Places to avoid and places highly recommended - 17 years ago
Oh, and we went to Hercules in Pefkohori, very expensive and because we had not been in for a few years (having previously gone in very regularly) very cool reception. Fast Food NIkki in Kallithea near traffice lights. Nice giros, friendly staff, have been there years and we have been going for years, just forgot to mention before. Diana Hotel in Pefkohori. We have never stayed there but goby Jane - Halkidiki
Places to avoid and places highly recommended - 17 years ago
After 30 years of visiting Halkidiki, and having just returned from three weeks, I thought it would be nice to have a thread where people could put their highly recommended places for all to try, but also to put the ones to avoid. There is no excuse in a tourist area for bad or rude service, and thankfully it is not very common. However on our last visit March to April this year we have two pby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Whats the prices like for food - 17 years ago
We used Economy Car Rentals three times. Last time in November the car was absolutely disgraceful. Dirty, old, tatty and smelt of cigarettes. We were very disappointed. This time we used Avis. Before we have used Kriopigi Cars and they are fine.by Jane - Halkidiki

Re: going to fourka, whats to do? - 17 years ago
Seriously Joe, dont worry. I am always in the sea and I am really mardy about these sort of things. I now live there for six months of the year and I am terrified of wasps, horseflies, jelly fish and more, but I manage and I dont even run down the beach screaming anymore (wouldnt be very refined now I am over 50 ! might have looked more cute when I was 20....... Anyway, go in the sea it woulby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Whats the prices like for food - 17 years ago
If you try to stick to the non tourist type tavernas where possible, it is possible to eat really cheaply. However you do need a car, so I supose the car rental makes them more expensive !! Do get a car, it is a lovely peninsular and if you stay in one resort you do miss out on a lot. There is a nice fishing village near where we live, called Nea Skioni. Very Greek, just a few tourists but lby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Vourvourou - 17 years ago
Only been for the day whilst living in Skioni. Lovely beaches, from what we could see lots of small tavernas dotted about, small supermarkets but nothing big that we saw. It is I think a very small place and not very touristy, but lovely. Mount Athos. I think you will need to go to Nea Marmaras or another place I cant quite think of the name of, but your hotel/apartment owners should know.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: going to fourka, whats to do? - 17 years ago
There are sometimes small jellyfish, just slightly coloured small pieces of jelly really. Dont sting at all these. Seen the laarge brown ones after high winds, but usually May and Sept. Kept well away anyway ! Mind the fish nibbling your toes, doesnt hurt but comes as a shock sometimes.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: fourka - 17 years ago
Just back Jeff. All OK, we had a cold first week but improved for following two weeks. Last day cloudy, but then we had a lovely time anyway. Easter was good, the soup was amazing at our friends house. Never had soup at 1230am before and was sure I would be sick, but heyho wasnt. Dogs being poisoned. We went to see Julie who rescues and rehomes dogs. She had rescued I think it was four from Foby Jane - Halkidiki

Jeff, we go tomorrow!!!! Will update you on my return 18 April. Can't wait. Although on afitos weather forecast it says snow next two days. Surely, they have got it wrong. Anyway but early April up to 22 approx, so cross fingers. Should I take skis?by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hotel Nostos - Kallithea - 17 years ago
Can be anything from 25 - 35 degrees, depends on prevailing conditions. Usually 30 deg is more the norm, but expect that it could be very hot. Last year we went end June leaving 23 July and for two days around 28 June (I remember cause it was my birthday, 50th !) it was extremely hot, 37 degrees and sweltering. The rest of the holiday was around 30 degrees. Enjoy.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: building work ioli village - 17 years ago
Re toilet paper. Yes, but you soon get used to it. We are going over long term for next three years and never gave it a thought. However, my brother (aged 70) still keeps asking me if the situation has changed ! Doesnt stop him loving Greece though. Have a great time.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hotel Palladium - Kriopigi - 17 years ago
Late November there was no trace in the sea. You should be fine. We are going in two weeks so will report back then.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hotel Palladium - Kriopigi - 17 years ago
The fire did destroy huge amounts of forest, but we went in Nov and there is still plenty of forest about. The worst bit is from Hanioti towards Pefkohori and beyond, and the absolute worst is the mountain road from Hanioti to Skioni, which is near where we live. Very sad to see the forest burnt down on this road. However, Halkidiki is still very green and there is still lots of forest about.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: fourka - 17 years ago
Hi Jeff, not long for us now, we go out 28 March for three weeks. Will be sure to let you know how we go on, although as you know we dont go to Fourka lol !! Well we do occasionally...... Anyway looking forward to our first Greek Easter. Although we have been going 30 years and lived there for three, we never managed an Easter. So here goes. Hoping for sunshine, it was 19 in Vouvourous the otby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Distances - 17 years ago
Beppe, thank you. Your English is far better than my Italian, so don't worry. We understand you. I will search out the book A Man. I have found it on the internet, a biography about him and it looks very interesting. Jeff, yes you must get out of Fourka! There really are some super places, although you have missed the gorgeous road from Skioni over the mountains through the forest as it haby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Distances - 17 years ago
Beppe, yes we went to Vergina and it was excellent. We drove ourselves and it was just before the gold crown got stolen ! Also is Nymphaeo. We will try again this year. We went in November, but chose the only rainy day thinking it would get better as we got out of Thessaloniki. It didnt.! It rained all day, it took four hours to get there, and the whole village was closed. Very despondantby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Distances - 17 years ago
If you mean Edessa, they are a long way. About 3-4 hours from memory. Best to go on a trip if it is your first visit as the drive is very long. They are good and if you can get in the trip Pella and the mosaics and museum it is a very good and interesting day.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Distances - 17 years ago
Round Kassandra go to the end village of Loutra where there is a spa, and near there is Villa Stassa. Nice Greek taverna, they speak a little English, but lots of Greeks go there and people in the know. It is lovely, and the views over the sea are beautiful as you are high up. You can also walk down through the garden area down to rocks and swim and snorkel there. Nea Skioni fishing village isby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Calling All Property Owners - 17 years ago
You could try the Argos Hotel in Siviris. That has lots of nice apartment rooms and in a nice quiet area which is not too far from Kallithea. They have a website. We stayed there last year (we had stayed previously a long time before) and it was lovely. Nice clean rooms, pool and I think it was 35 euros a night in July. Will try to dig out details if you are interested, let me know.by Jane - Halkidiki
