Great, this is just what we need to do. When we go over this year we are taking our labrador with us. Wo Betide anyone who tries to harm her ! Seriously though we went in March for three weeks and I am sure we can make life safe for her. It just means no running about off the lead unless we are near the sea, as you know labradors, anything edible gone in a second. Luckily our place is on thby Jane - Halkidiki

Thanks Caron. We too help Julie and are just about ready to go over for four months this year, and 7 months the following two years. I have promised to help Julie both physically and financially as much as I can. When we saw Julie in March she had saved a few dogs from Fourka beach that had been poisoned. I do not know if the poisoning is deliberate or whether it is put down for rats and foxeby Jane - Halkidiki
hairdressers - 16 years ago
This is a question to the ex pats living out there please. Despite the fact that we have lived in Halkidiki before, for three years on the trot - April til November, we never did find a GOOD hairdresser for either my husband or myself in Halkidiki. Does anyone have any recommendations, or would it be better to go into Moudania or Thessaloniki when we want a good haircut. All we want is aby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Simanto Beach Hotel, Sani Resort - 16 years ago
Hi, never stayed there but do know where it is as we love to go around that area to find little bays and to go to Sani. It is in a lovely location, if somewhat isolated. You do not have any villages or anything nearby so you will need a car if you want to eat out and look at other places. We did go down to their beach late one year we were staying there and found some lovely shells and likedby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: yasou jane - 16 years ago
Hi Jeff, yes secret bikers. Last time we lived there three years we shipped over a Yamaha VMax, drew a lot of attention ! But, we couldnt get insurance in Greece unless we changed to Greek numberplates. That was going to cost £1K, so we didnt bother. So this time, we are buying a Greek bike so we can get insurance etc. At the end of our three years we can sell it over there. Last time we hadby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: yasou jane - 16 years ago
Jeff, forgot to ask you. Two questions. One is, is the main road still under repair making the journey so much longer into Thess? Second, has the sewer works progressed any, i.e. have they repaired a few roads instead of leaving them like piles of rubble ! ? Cheers. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: yasou jane - 16 years ago
Hi Jeff I saw you were back. Glad you enjoyed it and went somewhere else apart from Fourka ! It is very sad about the fire, but glad your wifes graves was untouched. I think you said in another post that the turtles were still there too? We are all OK. Off to USA in two weeks for a month, already booked before we found our place in Halk. Never mind, will try to economise a bit as we areby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Kriopigi : Laundry and Meteora - 16 years ago
There is a laundry for definite in Kallithea, about a ten minute taxi ride away. I don't think there is one in Kriopigi, certainly didnt see one when we went in March. We are driving over In August to our rental home. Hope we may see you in the Sweet Coffee Shop run by our friends Morfy and Sakis. Crepes to die for, sweet and savoury, buffalo beefburgers, sandwiches, coffees, drinks, speciaby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti and Daphne Village? - 16 years ago
Wasps can be an issue anywhere at any time. We lived there three years and for two it was just a normal type of wasp problem, the third year was horrendous and we often resorted to going indoors to eat as we were swarmed by them. Usually we find September to be the worse time, to be honest mozzies are sometimes more of a nuisance but at least you can get repellant (I do hate going out smellingby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti - 16 years ago
Jennifer, spirits are a really good measure though. I reckon at least a triple measure, and all mixers are free with the spirit. So 5 euros is what you will pay for say a triple vodka and tonic. Same all over the peninsula as far as price. Some places give a better measure than others. Try the beerhouse, Zythion, they do good measures. And, a tip, I never take ice, so get more of the spiritby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Royal Tombs - 16 years ago
The Vergina tombs are well worth the trip. We went and were amazed at the set up. Edessa is lovely too. Pella is that way on, look in there too. If you fancy a very long drive, go to Nymphaeo to visit the Bear Sanctuary. It is about a five hour drive but it is a lovely old village, and also there is a wolf sanctuary.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: horseshoe bar - 16 years ago
October can be lovely and warm and dry. I think last year they got some rain. We were there three years April til end Oct and had great weather all the time. It depends like anywhere nowadays, you can get wet or dry. We will be there til December, so I am hoping we will get some good weather. We went Nov last year for a week and it was 20 deg and sunny. Have a great time Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: KRIOPIGI, POLIHRONO, HANIOTI, PEFKOHORI: Latest Weather Forecast!! - 16 years ago
try =EUR|GR|GR000|AFITOS&metric=1 Gives forecast for Afitos which is on Kassandra peninsula. Looks good to me. Don't worry it will be fine. If it rains it usually dries up pretty quickly at this time of year.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Info Needed - 16 years ago
Hi Sarah, as someone who went into Poligiros hospital when we lived over there previously, I would suggest you head straight for Thessaloniki. I was moved to Thessaloniki after a week and the difference was tremendous. Also there is now a new hospital near the airport. private, but it doesnt cost that much apparently and it would be where I would head to in future. Nothing against Poligirosby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Things to do ...... - 16 years ago
Pekohori is a busy tourist town, nothing at all like Brighton ! Just busy. Very Greek, mostly set on main road which is very busy in high season. Nice long beach, jetty. Nice beachfront with cafes, tavernas etc that are a bit more expensive than on the main road, but nicer setting. As far as I can remember and we went there last in March there is nothing remotely similar to Brighton or Blackpoolby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weekly Markets. - 16 years ago
Hi Dave, depends on whether you have transport. We don't actually eat in Pefko, we usually eat in Paliori (Yannikos) and Loutra (Villa Stasa) as we find these places are very low in tourist numbers and have more Greek people go, hence it is cheaper to eat, good portions and real Greek food. There are obviously some places like this in the tourist towns but I have to be honest and say we don'tby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weekly Markets. - 16 years ago
There is a market in Kassandrea on Kassandra. For the life of me, and we live there months on end, I cannot remember the day, but I think it is Tuesday. There is also a much larger market in Nea Moudania which is about half an hour drive away the following day, i.e. Wed or Thursday. Someone on the forum will confirm, my memory must be going down the pan! The market in Kassandrea has loads of fby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: HALKIDIKI ASK YOUR QUESTIONS - 16 years ago
Ken, just another thought. Roads in Halkidiki especially on Kassandra peninsula are very busy in July and August, and if you are a Grecophile you will know the way the Greeks drive ! So please be very careful. At least down Nea Skioni end it is a bit more peaceful on the roads, although still busy in July and August. Have a great time.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: HALKIDIKI ASK YOUR QUESTIONS - 16 years ago
Hi there Ken, we live near Nea Skioni when we go over to Halkidiki. It is a fairly new addition to the tourist industry as mainly Greeks go there and it is only recently it appeared to UK holiday makers. As such it is still quite a Greek village, lovely though with a great Bakery, a nice new bar called La Place, a few small supermarkets which stock nice fresh fruit etc., and I think in March we sby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: HALKIDIKI ASK YOUR QUESTIONS - 16 years ago
Coolcupid, lots and lots of people either live in Halkidiki or have been going many years. So as it is a forum and for the use of everyone, you can't just hog one thread to yourself ! However much you think you know about the place, others may know more. Jeff is very helpful and has been going there many years, probably before you were born.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: CAR HIRE - 16 years ago
We used Economy Car Rentals for the third time. Was in November last year. Car was terrible, dirty old, tatty and smelt of tobacco. So, when we went in March we used Avis. Just a note.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Jeep hire Hanioti, Boat Hire - 16 years ago
Hi Graham , nice to hear from you ! Yes we go Aug til Dec this year, and then next two years April til Nov. We have rented a nice house in Mola Kaliva, miles away from Kriopigi but we like it that way. We have the quietness of the village and that side, and come over the mountain to visit the busier side. Best of both worlds. Maybe we will see you next year. As you know we have to "chby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Jeep hire Hanioti, Boat Hire - 16 years ago
Hi Graham, did you ever read my message I sent re Sweet Coffee Shop, or aren't you friends with me anymore ! Have a good time. We will probably see you there next year when we go April til Nov. This year we dont go til August Give Morfy and Sakis our love Bye for now Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Early July - Evening Temperature - 16 years ago
Usually I never need anything other than a skirt or trousers and top in the evening from June through to mid Sept. But as Pedro says, take a light sweatshirt just in case.by Jane - Halkidiki

Otis, forgot to mention a nice bar, Casablanca Sports Bar in Kriopigi. Debbie and Tony will welcome you. Another first for us this year when we visited in March.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Casablanca sports bar! - 16 years ago
Hi Debbie, we can't wait to get back in August and will definitely be visiting your bar even though we live "on the other side " !! Have a great summer and see you in August. Jane and Martyn from Belper, Derbyshire.by Jane - Halkidiki
