Re: Things to do in Kriopigi ... - 10 years ago
I wouldn`t hire a quad bike unless you`re carrying an organ donor card !! There are local agencies that can arrange tours and excursions, if you want to go SCUBA diving, try Triton Dive Club, they`ll pick you up and take you to their dive base and take you back afterwards, there`s the boat trip to Mount Athos, 4wheel drive "Adventure", trips to Thessaloniki, Alexander the Great`s burialby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Where to stay in Halkidiki - 10 years ago
As far as I am aware, ALL of Halkidiki is safe. Depends on their budget there are in-expensive apartments through to 5star hotels Pefkohori is, in my opinion, the best place to stay, but Hanioti is very nice too, as is Polichrono, Kalithea, Kryopigi and Afitos just pick one and go for it, they are all fairly close together and there`s a regular bus service between them or a taxi..just go for it !by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Weather in May please!!!! - 10 years ago
By May, it`s usually warm -very warm in the daytime and a little chilly at night, sometimes it rains, and when it rains, it comes down like it`s going to flood for up to half an hour (see you-tube rain in Pefkohori, taken by me in May I think 2012) then its nice and clear for a week or soby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 11 years ago
Depends entirely on the route you take, how fast you want to drive, whether you want to stay in hotels or camp sites or drive through the night, which ferry you take from Venice/Ancona/Brindisi, which port you want to arrive at Igoumenitsa/Patras/Pireus and where in Greece you want to get to..when you`ve decided those...ask me againby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 11 years ago
Paul. if you read the above messages I left for others wanting to use overland transport to Greece, you`ll see there are many alternative routes. What I would steer clear of is France, the quickest routes are Paiage, and expensive, the Belgium/Germany/Austria/Italy route is the most interesting, particularly if you want to see the Maginot Line and/or the Siegfried Line and the Menin Gate in Ypresby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Water Sports in Kriopigi & Neighbouring Resorts - 11 years ago
If you wish for further water sports, besides SCUBA diving..at the far end of Pefkohori beach, last year, don`t know about this season `cos I`m in UK at present, there was a paragliding/wind surfing/pedallo/jet-ski hire set up .worth a lookby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: beaches in kripiogi - 11 years ago
Driving from the airport is not a major problem, your hired car should be waiting for you, ..just go out of the airport, remember to keep right !! straight through the traffic lights, stay in the right hand lane as very soon you will be bearing right... signpost for Kassandra... onto the dual carriageway, same road all the way down to the end of the peninsula..just after Nea Moudania you can stopby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: A Week in Kriopigi - Spending Money - 11 years ago
Budget for meals..depends on whether you want to eat a lot or a little, you can get a Giros and Amstel in Hanioti for €1.40 or a pizza for €11 which you won`t finish they are huge !! For around €70 you can spend half a day learning how to SCUBA (if you can`t already) dive with Triton Dive Club, My recommendation would be to book direct with Dimitris (0030)694477757. Mention my name, you mby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki

Re: Things to do & see in Halkidiki, Kassandra - 11 years ago
Depends what you are interested in, the place has a lot of history, archeological sites, The ancient site of Olynthos for instance, the caves at Petralona. Mount Athos (sail trip only, unless you are a monk already) Sithonia is just beautiful to drive round. Lots to see if you walk around in the hills. The beaches throughout Kassandra have safe swimming, you can learn to SCUBA dive with Triton Diby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: HANIOTI / BELLA GRECIA HOTEL - 11 years ago
Bella Grecia is about ten-fifteen minutes walk (depends how fast you walk) from the centre of Hanioti, if you use the main road you are likely to be injured ..it`s a very fast road, better to cross it and use the narrow and thus slower road between beach and main road, or walk on the beach. Have a look on Google Earth...you won`t get "street view" but it`ll give you a good idea just howby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Driving to Halkidiki - 11 years ago
I would avoid Switzerland...at the border you have to pay for a "Road Tax" sticker, to be legal on the Swiss roads that you will only be on for a few hours, best route is, through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria and over the Brenner Pass. French roads are good but "Payage" is expensive.... Forget Ancona, get the ferry from Venice, saves a long drive and Venice is worth sby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Wedding advice needed! Hi there me and my wife to be are getting married in Crete in June but we have not booked anything as yet but we do not know where to start our holiday has been booked through thomas cook so we were going to get them to bo - 11 years ago
You might try asking on a Cretan site, this one being for Halkidiki, Northern Greece, Mainland, many kilometres from Crete, which is an island south east of here ! (See a map of Greece for location)by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 12 years ago

Re: Nick @ Horseshoe Bar Hanioti - 12 years ago
I find it strangely, minimally racist, for anyone to want any particular bias on ethnicity of visitors, to a holiday destination..after all, Xanioti is a purpose built vacation spot..the fact that the Russians/East Europeans have taken up the void left by "The Brits". 20/30 years ago ALL the signs were in Engish ..Cigarettes, Beer, (how many bars still advertise "John Smiths Smootby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: supermarkets - 12 years ago
From the gate onto the main road, turn right walk past Lemonis, across the road leading into Hanioti, carry on for 40 metres, you`ll be outside Arvanitidis..OR turn left and walk 80 metres and you`ll be outside Masoutisby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti - 12 years ago
The closure of these bars and restaurants can be blamed on several factors, high rents, all inclusive deals, in more and more hotels, failure to pay taxes and/or suppliers in a few cases, leading to a "moonlight flit". Failure to adapt to changing customer demographic. plus the fact that Greece should never, in my opinion(for what that`s worth) have joined the €urozone..a country whoby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: cape possidi- an unknown paradise! - 12 years ago
I would think that the thousands of people who visit and stay at the many hotels in Posidi would know about the "unknown" paradise..it`s only "unknown" until you know about it, at which point it becomes a well known fact..to those who know it well ...which evidently, you now do..congratulations..join the club !!!by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Thomson Holidays - 12 years ago
Brian the Gent and anyone else finding Xfers from airport to Hanioti/Pef etc, what you need is a friend with a car who will do it for you for a "consideration"..considerably less than a taxi fare..by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Returning to UK. October + - 12 years ago
If anyone in the Hanioti / Pefkohori area is going back to the UK by road after 15th October, and would like assistance with the driving, thereby reducing the journey time and expense of overnight accomodation. I would like to offer my services ..Post on this page or `phone me at Triton Scuba Shop, Pef. 23740 61102by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Getting there? Athens to Halk - 12 years ago
There is a rail service from Athens to Thessaloniki. So you`ll get to see some of the Greek countryside on the journey, it`s not fast, but it`s cheaper than flying ! Then you need to get a bus to the Kassandra Peninsula.by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 12 years ago
You need to cross the channel, by boat, ot train, when you get to France, head for Italy but not on French Toll roads, too expensive, go to Belgium Luxembourg, Germany, Austria..you might need either a GPS device or..a map, you know, one of those books with lines representing roads, which you can look at, from time to time, to see if you are heading in the right direction ! Or..you could plan youby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Things to do in and around Hanioti/Pefkohori/Polychrono - 12 years ago
You can hire a bicycle, scooter, quad or car from various places, depending on where you are staying. There are various excursions, day trips etc. Athos, Thessaloniki, Sithonia, Learn to SCUBA dive with Triton SCUBA in Pefkohori,(0030) 6944777575. Boat trips, lots of places to visit, lots of bars, restaurants etc. you`ll have a great time here in Halkidiki The sea water is crystal clear, and in Aby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 12 years ago
Not much has changed, petrol is a bit more expensive, food prices slightly but not a great deal of difference from last yearby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Do we get our euros now - 12 years ago
You are going to have to get something other than Sterling, I would get €uros and change them on a day to day basis if Greece has gone back to the Drachma by the time you get here, then if you have any left, you can spend them in Germany at least !!!by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 12 years ago
1500 road miles, 14-24 hours ferry (shortest ..Brindisi-Igoumenitsa but all the way down Italy`s leg) 4-10 hour drive from whichever port ..then a holiday then drive back..all in ten days..no hope or bob hope..take your pick !by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Bars and Resturants in Hanioti - 12 years ago
Depends what you like to eat..for Pizza, I recommend "Gusto Italiano" in the square, excellent food, carnivore or veggy..decent prices, good wine selection ..what more do you need ? Also, just for "the @#$%&" go to "Nicks Bar" to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, it`s an al-fresco bar.make sure you ask for a "Beptina"by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: bus ticket's price - 12 years ago
There is only one bus, approx every hour, runs from the Kassandra peninsula to Thess and back, so you cannot get confused, if however you want to go to Sithonia or Poligiros etc, you need to consult a timetable, presumably available on lineby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Hotels in Pefkohori - 12 years ago
No great changes have taken place, in the centre of the town, all the shops hotels etc. are still standing, some may have changed names, but not the Aussie supermarket. some have had a face lift, but the main changes you will notice is the amount of "new build" housing..there used to be a gap between Polichrono and Hanioti, and between Hanioti and Pefkohori, now, if you didn`t know, youby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: bus ticket's price - 12 years ago
Halkidiki Station ?? do you mean somewhere on the Kassandra Peninsula, Halkidiki is a region of Northern Greece not a town !! Assuming you mean Hanioti or Pefkohori....You would need (I think) to get a taxi to Thermi, just up the road from the airport, as there are no busses from the airport to Halkidiki and there is no point in going from the airport to Thessaloniki just to get a bus to the peby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
