Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
We don't know that the reporters didn't report what they were told. There was a report that dodgy developers had set fire to the woods. I agree it was questionasble but there is no evidence that it was lightning either so it's all assumption. I think news reporters are always torn between being in the middle of a big story and the suffering around them. I know BBC reporters who covered 9/1by stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
The police and emergency services were reporting the fire as being started deliberately. I agree that there was lightning and that could well have been the cause but I was basing my view on news reports of arson. I too am happy to get home in one piece but as many others have already been promised compensation I believe the offer should be the same no matter which company you went with. Re: i am sick of..... - 17 years ago
I was in Hanioti that night and at one time was ready to call my parents to say goodbye. If you had seen me I was calm and looking unconcerned with my wife and daughter alongside me. Doesn't mean I wasn't scared though! Maybe we overeacted but had the wind not changed then it could have been far worse. Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
I'm not moaning and groaning about compensation but still think we should get some. This was caused by arson and lost us money and spoilt our holiday. It's hardly ever going to be the reps fault but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be compensated. However, in my view we weren't looked after, weren't kept informed and this DID spoil our holiday. This wouldn't stop me going back to Halkidiki thouby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Sakis, please tell Morfy - 17 years ago
Is Morfy the BBC link person? I was interviewed along with my daughter and Bob and Adrew Clarke by Malcolm Brabant and someone I thought said her name was Mirf. They wee very professional and were having a busy week what with the stolen icon and the fire all over Kassandra. I'd guess they hadn't been so busy for a while in such a quiet area. I'd guess the BBC have an office in Thessalonikiby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
The fire started to be a problem in Hanioti on MONDAY night, not Sunday as Tony suggests and the evacuation began on Tuesday afternoon. I've been told to write a report for Thomas Cook as I will not hear from them, as promised by the rep. I believe we should get some compensation for the stress, inconvenience and effectively ending our holiday early. I guess they will try to avoid any pay-out.by stripedblood - Halkidiki

Jane, Never got up the corage to go & see Amanda before the proverbial hit the fan. I'm quite shy really! I hope they were OK as I know the fire was quitre close that end of the beach. Thanks for all the advice and ideas before the holiday it helped me a lot. Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
Just to say that our friends Lee and Charlie (Charlotte) left the morning of the fire and were extremely complimentary about Hot Goblin and we were planning to go there ourselves at their recommendation! Unfortunately we never got the chance. I'd recommend Central Cafe as a place to people-watch in style having being introduced by Steve from here (hope you are OK Steve?) Afros is quite nice tooby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
Well we arrived back yesterday. I can understand some suggesting there was panic on Monday and that maybe people were over cautious, but hindsight is a brilliant thing. I also would suggest that those with businesses in Kassandra would obviously try to underplay the danger. But I'll give you some facts from my perspective and then the judgement is in your court. Re: Bars in Hanioti - 17 years ago
Thanks Nicola, I'll take my dancing shoes then! 1.5 days to work. Not that I'm counting or anything! (I'll be the one in the white suit) Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Bars in Hanioti - 17 years ago
So are these bars age limited? :-) I'm an old gimmer but like modern music and a night out! My daughter is 13 going on 24 and would also like a good dance if she meets some mates out there. I'll be chaperone! Gby stripedblood - Halkidiki

Re: Pefkohori and Hanioti 2006 our thoughts - 17 years ago
Jane, My mouth is watering at the thought! I personally enjoy Stifado and stuffed vine leaves but will try anything once. I've a soft spot for kalamares too! We will try to visit your recommendations. Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Pefkohori and Hanioti 2006 our thoughts - 17 years ago
Wow! I'm printing this all off for reference. My wife, daughter and I enjoy good food. My wife is a 12 hrs a day on the beach person wheras I prefer a few in the sun and a few in the bar! I may well set off for a drive by myself to see sights and sites. I'll get a good map and pray I don't get lost. Thanks again for all the advice. I can't wait! Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Pefkohori and Hanioti 2006 our thoughts - 17 years ago
Luckily on holiday I can lie down the following day for several hours to recover! I'm hoping to get a car for a few days. Any suggested hire firms in Hanioti and suggested "must visit" venues. I'm told Mt Athos is one (my parents stayed in Kalithea 25 yrs ago) but I assume their memories will be a little out of date!by stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Amanda - Old Tavern - 17 years ago
Personally I think this lady deserves more respect - she owns a pub for God's sake! I hope to pop in and be respectful from 10-24 August! Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Pefkohori and Hanioti 2006 our thoughts - 17 years ago
Jane, Too old for clubbing? You are having a larf? I'm 49 going on 23 and intend to "have it large" this holiday - if my back holds up! ;-) Lock up your daughters, mothers, grandmothers & walking frames! Graham PS The wife thinks I'm going for late night strolls!by stripedblood - Halkidiki

Re: Hanioti 10-24 August anyone? - 17 years ago
Just a few days overlap then. Shame. Would have been good to meet up but might be difficult. We arrive 10th your last night is 12th which you will spend with friends so only really leaves 11th! Yes, the Greek night seems to get good reports. I might even get up to dance. After over 20 years visiting Greece I should be better than I am! Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki

Hanioti 10-24 August anyone? - 17 years ago
Hi, I'll be there with wife and 13yr old daughter so anyone else about that time? Anyone fancying watching a match and having a few beers is more than welcome! Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti websites - 17 years ago
I found this picture but as its unreadable and ten years old it isn't much help. Surely an up to date one could be found and scanned? If not i'll try to get one when I'm there. Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Hanioti websites - 17 years ago
Are there any sites linked to hotels, bars, restaurants in Hanioti and does anyone have an actual street map of the Town showing hotels, bars, etc? Would be a useful addition to this site if posible. I love to plan ahead! Grahamby stripedblood - Halkidiki
Re: Water Park - 17 years ago
This is the Waterland website. I e-mailed them yesterday and got an excellent response today. Trips run from resorts via agencies - I'm in Hanioti from 10/08 - and take about 1hr from there. The website is good but I'm not sure it makes it look like a huge park. But its got everything I'd want I think. Certainly has good PR! But you might think they would stick a small advert on thiby stripedblood - Halkidiki
