Re: Snakes and repellant - 14 years ago
Hi Jane I believe there is only one poiseness snake which is small with a red marking on its back. I have seen a larger snake but they are harmless, unless of course the sight of it gives you a heart attack lol. There are also scorpions of course that mainly live in the tree bark. They can sting and may cause a nasty reaction. So be careful if your bringing in wood for the fire.by joanne - Halkidiki
Re: restaurants - 14 years ago
I agree Brian its whatever you enjoy eating. Its nice to have such a variety to choose from. If you go to Thesalonica there is also a wide range of restaurants, Indian, Thai, Chinese because the Greeks dont just want to eat the same old greek food, Stifado, Mousaka and the like. On the harbour in the city they have best fish and chip shop I have ever been to. It comes served on large white sqby joanne - Halkidiki

Re: Pefkohori & Surrounds - Hire car or not? - 14 years ago
Hi there there will be lots of places showing sport, and if you want the tennis I am sure anyone will oblige as long as your buying drinks or food. If you hire a car. There is not much to see historically, but a couple of older villages Afitos and Paliouri are quite nice. The whole peninsular is just one road all the way round and takes about one hour to complete, with one road that cutsby joanne - Halkidiki

Re: Things to do in and around Hanioti/Pefkohori/Polychrono - 14 years ago
What a shame Josh and Jane. You must be the only people taking any notice of a ban on fishing. Greek people have rules and laws but no one ever abides by them. You probably could have taken a walk down the beach where ther were no tourists to hook and that would have been no prolem. As for the chips, I think they are just to fill the plate. If ever you go to greece again in any restuarant ask forby joanne - Halkidiki
Re: Pirate Ship Cruise - 14 years ago
Hi there if you book this with one of the local trip companies - it will be alot cheaper just specify which trip you want and times - if you are staying in another resort you may need the hotel to book you a taxi to get you there. But well worth enquiring as the price can be very different. Also you wont spend forever on the coach picking up from different locations.by joanne - Halkidiki
Re: ampelia studios - 14 years ago
Hi Andony Ampelia studios is off the main road - just past the supermarket. Turn off the road where you see the sign for the Daphne hotel. It is a ten minute walk from the village. Run by a guy called Pandelise. Very nice I am sure you will enjoy your stay. Remember us to him we used to live in the houses opposite - Joanne and Johnby joanne - Halkidiki
Re: labrador puppy - 15 years ago
Hi Helen and Jane you are both right. The Greeks will never change. But what they also seem to forget is that halkidiki especially relies very much on tourism. The tourists do not want to see dead or dying cats and dogs. Or packs of dogs roaming the streets, they also dont want dogs poisoned for their benefit before the season starts. The problem is not the dogs, it is the greeks mentality.by joanne - Halkidiki
Re: Hanioti Beach - Sea Urchins? - 15 years ago
Sea Urchins are prickly. So yes they will hurt you. They cling to rocks. So avoid the rocks, wear shoes in the sea, stick to the sandy areas or stick to the swimming pool, you'll be fine.by joanne - Halkidiki

Re: Hairdressers - 15 years ago
Hi all at this time of year you may get work in the bars hotels or restaurants, bar work waitressing or cleaning the wage is not very good and the hours very long. The best money is with the tour companies Thompson etc if you can get in there then its English wages. If you are staying there for the winter, make as much money as you can. In the winter there is no work. Good luck Joby joanne - Halkidiki

Re: It is snowing - 16 years ago
Hey Nick love your snowy pictures, and the others on your own web site, specially the one that looks like a strange lunar landscape you would never guess it is Greece. Can we have some pics of the St Georges day celebration this year for Hanioti if they still have it. If you manage to go. I can never see why Hanioti does'nt advertise this at all, I had a great time there and nearly won a goatby joanne - Halkidiki
Re: Moving to Halkidiki - 16 years ago
Hi Angie lucky and brave you to be taking such a big adventure. You will need to be careful of the time you move out, because the season runs from May to October if you are lucky. Because May and September are quiet times. Through the winter there is no work. But I am sure you know that. There may be work with the travel companies but if you can arrange anything now from this end it will bby joanne - Halkidiki
Re: aqua park - 16 years ago
Hi Eric we lived in Hanioti and also drove many times back and forwards. I would say if you are a very experienced driver in Greece you will know that people will just pull out in front of you, overtake on bends in large lorries, and that the roads can be hazardous when the weather is hot. Having had in the space of a year a friend who died on that road and two who nearly died I think thaby joanne - Halkidiki
Re: aqua park - 16 years ago
Hi all enquiring about the water park. I would say really not worth the journey. If you go on the organised trip you are looking at a 2 hour coach journey, by the time they have done lots of pick ups on the way. If you are hiring a car its a 1 hour journey with mad greek drivers, which is okay if you are used to driving in Greece. The water park itself is not camparable to ones in say Spain, aby joanne - Halkidiki

Re: I live in Polichrono - 16 years ago
Hi Debbie be very careful when out with your dog. We were walking through a wooded area with ours, when a shepherd came along with a pack of about 20 dogs following him. They then turned their attention to us and we had to run for it. Our dog was in the van before we were and the dogs surrounded us barking, it was a relief to get away in one peice. This was in the middle of winter so I am gby joanne - Halkidiki
