Hi all

Does anyone know what the medical services are like out there (ie Doctors, Dentist ect) just in case, you never know if you might need them.

Hi Steve

I can say from both sides of the coin. Having been on holiday there with holiday insurance, I had a problem with my back in that I could not move at all for a week, in total agony. The service via the insurance company was excellent. The doctor arrived at our apartment within an hour, I was kept under observation and attention, and after five days I had to walk to his surgery to prove I was fit to fly ! Not that far, but far enough it was.

So, on a holiday with your insurance you are fine. There are medical centres/surgeries in most of the small villages. You can go to the chemist for most things not urgent as they are more qualified than our chemists and can give you certain medications.

Long term stays are more difficult. When we were there over the last two years both my husband (first year) and me (second year) had some problems. We paid to see a private doctor and the service was fine, not that expensive but the tests (ct scan) I had to have done in Thessaloniki cost us a fortune. We also went to the new hospital in Thessaloniki the first year and my husband saw a stomach specialist, 45 mins consultation and some recommendations although no treatment, but that only cost 50 euros. He also saw a heart specialist at one stage in Nea Moudanea, and after about five visits with lots of tests, the bill was less than 90 euros.

So to summarise, if you are on holiday and have insurance, I can see no problems.

Dentists, not sure as have never had to go - it takes me ages to go in the UK, haha!!

There is another plus side to the local medical centres, that although they seem a bit old fashioned you get your xray results etc almost immediately, no two week wait !

Swings and roundabouts........................
