Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 12 years ago
The only difference is how crowded the ferry will be. There are two options you can drive from Igoumenitsa to Halkidiki or stay on the ferry `til Patras and drive from there..I would do the first option as it`s a brand new road and a fantastic scenic route. When you get to Pefkohori, call in at the Triton Scuba Shop and book your dives, if you`ve never done it before, I`ll teach you..Oh, and therby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki

Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 12 years ago
Having done the trip several times I`ll tell you my preferred route, Motorway for the majority of the drive :-Dunkirk-Lille-Charleroi-Luxembourg-Saarbruken-Karlsruhe-Stuttgart-Munich-Innsbruck (Brenner Pass)-Bolzano-Trento-Verona-Padova-Venice but, I have to say that you are being a little optimistic in only wanting to stop for one night, I did it stopping overnight in Luxembourg and Innsbruck anby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Things to do in and around Hanioti/Pefkohori/Polychrono - 12 years ago
Hi, if you come to Pefkohori, find the Triton SCUBA dive shop(across the road from the Aegean petrol station) call in and book your "Discover SCUBA Diving" course Great fun !!by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti - 12 years ago
The beach at Hanioti is a mix of sand, shingle, pebbles, depending on which bit you are on. Trips are available, most people do the Mount Athos one, it takes all day to get to and from the Athos peninsula, sailing up and down the coast. If you want something really exciting, go to Pefkohori, find the Triton SCUBA dive shop, across the road from the Aegean Petrol station and book your first lessonby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: horse shoe bar - 12 years ago
Nick`s is open already, with a "major re-fit"..well, for Nick anyway..he`s re-painted all the chairs, and some tables, blue and white..Sadly Taff will not be here this season, he`s not too well currently, though we have no specific details as to what the problem is !by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
Hanioti and Pefkohori are the two main resort centres, Hanioti was "purpose built" around the fountain in the square as a resort, after a major earthquake in the `30`s I believe, Pefkohori is not as "commercial", but more of a traditional village. There are other villages along the coast of the Kassandra Peninsula:- Polichrono, Kriopigi, Kalithea, Afitos (or Athitos) Nea Foukeby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: SCUBA Diving - 13 years ago
The main one, where we do "Discover Scuba Diving" is Porto Valitsa, just down the road from the Chrouso Village Hotel (where the dive base is) nearby Paliouri, the others are the many inlets bays and other accessible parts of the coast, I do not know all their place-names, just how to get to them ! They range in interest:- caves, deep, shallow, flora and fauna etc.by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Halkidiki advice required! - 13 years ago
Kriopigi (Cold Spring) is a beautiful village, though the beach is difficult to get to, if the little train is not operating, so unless you intend to stay on the beach all the time I would recommend hiring a car, The best beach? for sand and shallow water, Palliouri, towards the tip of the peninsula, Polichrono`s is long and narrow, Hanioti, broad sand/pebbles, Pefkohori narrow sand/pebbles, butby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Sarantis Apartments/Hotel - Hanioti - 13 years ago
As far as I am aware, Sarantis Hotel no longer deals with UK operators, because they do not pay enough for the rooms. If you want to holiday in Hanioti, the only hotels available are Niaz and Niaz Beach, Renaissance, Hilltop, Halkidiki Palace, Calypso. Tropical and Hanioti Palace, unless you book direct with the hoteliers.by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki

Re: Expert Advice Needed - 13 years ago
The bus service to Thess. uses very nice,air-conditioned busses, the un-reliable bit refers to the fact that, due to the traffic, & the single track road from Nea Moudania southwards, they tend to run on G.M.T. (Thats Greek Maybe Time) the roundabout in Pefchohori is something the Greeks just have not got to grips with yet..all over the worl,:- give way to traffic on the roundabout, works welby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki

Re: Sithonia - first time need advice - 15 years ago
Try Ormos Panagias, on the eastern side of Sithonia, lots of secluded beaches within reach if you have a car...OR, if you want a bit more lto see and do, Neas Marmaras on the west side, most of the beaches in Sithonia are only accessible by car, on the North coast there is Nikiti and Gerrakini, with some hotels, apartments etc, which is then easier to get to Poligiros, Olynthos (the archeologicaby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki

Re: Aeollos Aparthotel, Pefkohori - 15 years ago
Hi, When you get to Aeollos, ask if they have any SMOKED BACON, or SMOKEY BACON CRISPS or if the fire alarm is working, or if the chips are WELL COOKED, and if the smell of burnt oil has dissipated yet as they had a fire in the early hours of Monday morning this week, Lisa the forgetful kitchen/bar/reception/chief cook and bottle washer left the chip pan on and set fire to the placeby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Transfers - help!? - 15 years ago
Hi When you get to the airport, look for the Thomas Cook reps, if they have room on any of their coaches the transfer cost is 25 Euro, failing that, get a Taxi to the Bus station and get on a service bus to the island, via Nea Modania.....Piece of cake.by davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Weather/ what to pack?! Confused - please help! - 15 years ago
Hi Luce The forecast for Halkidiki for the next few days (the ones you are interested in are Mon scattered clouds 82 degrees Tue same Weds 83 Thu same Fri cloudy 80 So do not worry about the weather, bring enough sun tan lotion, you can get a sun tan sitting in the shade and if its a bit too cloudy to sit on the beach, why not call in at Nicks Horseshoe bar and have a cocktail or a frappeby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Ideal place to stay in Halkidiki? Help please!!!! - 15 years ago
You could try Hanioti Village, its far enough away from the town centre to be quiet, but near enough to be handy for Masoutis, beach, bars etc also its a nice place to stay, as the staff are Greek/Australians...from Hanioti you can explore by bus (they run on GMT, thats Greek Maybe Time) Thessaloniki is about an hour away, Petrlonas caves Olinthos, Edessa, Veroia, Pella all within striking distancby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki

Re: Ideal place to stay in Halkidiki? Help please!!!! - 15 years ago
Hi Laura... There are so many places to stay in Kassandria, but if you want someting totally different in Halkidiki, don`t forget the north of the area around Poligyros the capitol of the area, where you can explore the forests of the Holomondas hills where there are wild tortoises, wild boar, very few tourists, apart from the coach tours who visit Sogambros restaurant, as far as I know thereby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Exchange Rates - 15 years ago
Hi.. Go to the post office and get Euros from them in UK the best rate Ive seen this year has been 1.21....some of the hotels who tell you "we have the best rate" give you 87 cents to the pound after the commission....certainly the best rate for the hotel! sadly the economic situation(or Alistair Darling) isn`t helping the pound, Or try Northern Rock, since you and everyone who paysby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Ideal place to stay in Halkidiki? Help please!!!! - 15 years ago
Hi You could try Hanioti Village, as your base, its in the Thomas Cook brochure, quiet and peaceful, far enough away from the central square but near enough to get to when you get fed up with doing nothing...... within easy reach of the beach a 45 minute walk from Pefkohori on the beach roadby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
Re: Pallini or Hanioti - 15 years ago
Weddings are carried out at Hanioti town hall (in the administrative district of Pallini) only on Friday so you need to arrange your holiday/honeymoon around Friday, as to a traditional Greek taverna, you could try the Old Tavern just down the road from Pella Beach hotel, run by a guy called Dimitri, who lives in Weston Supermare during the winter, or maybe Zorba`s just off the town centre and aby davidpeterwoodhead - Halkidiki
