Re: Money transfer - 12 years ago
We transfer money the other way all the time i.e. UK to Greece using a currency broker. They give the best rates and only charge a small fee. Try Smart Currency to see if they work in reverse as well. He will need a Greek bank account though, or put the money in a friend's Greek account if he doesn't want to open one. The way it works is you buy the currency through the broker (the £s) thenby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: attending a wedding on Kassandra -- could use some local intelligence! - 12 years ago
If I were you I would rent a car to do the trip to / from the airport and stay in Pefkohori for the wedding and get a taxi from your hotel to the wedding. Aeollos is a nice (fairly basic) aparthotel at the Paliouri end of Pefkohori, they have their own website so you can contact them directly or book through First Choice. If you get a taxi from Thessaloniki it will take at least 1 hour eacby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
I imagine weddings at Sani will be beautiful. I haven't stayed there, but have visited the bars & restaurants a few times, and it is a stunning location. Enjoy!by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
Hi Lastking I don't know anything about the Sani Beach Hotel, but I do know that full board does not include drinks, just meals. If the AI is a good deal then maybe worth upgrading as drinks (alcohol) is quite expensive out there, and as Sani is quite isolated it is not as if you have a bog resort to explore with lots of bars. Probably worth checking if the local AI includes the bars aroundby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
Ian - I think Thomas Cook still do Aeollos in Pefkohori, or you could book direct and fly BA or Easyjet (assuming you are South in the UK) or just book a flight only with Thomas Cook or Thomsons, quite a few of the hotels have their own websites and you can book directly online. Allen - I'm afraid Fox Naoussa has closed down....by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Afitos, Kallithea, or Hanioti? - 13 years ago
I just replied on the other posting! I would say Hanioti would probably be best for you out of those 3 villages. Kallithea is very townlike and where the big clubs are located, Afitos is a beautiful old village but maybe a bit quiet & family orientated for you. Hanioti is quite lively with more young people and some busy bars round the square. Try Hanitoti Village for somewhere to stay:by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: What can I expect May 16 - 30? - 13 years ago
Hi Neil Most places will be opening over the Easter weekend and then they are open for the rest of the season, although some may only open on weekends for the first few weeks. I was in Pefkohori last year over the first weekend in May and the weather was lovely in the day (hot enough to swim and sunbathe) but quite chilly at night. My friend was there late May and said the same thing. Haby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Olympia Hotel Pefkohori - 13 years ago
Hi Allen I have not syaed at (or heard of this hotel) but just Googled it and it looks like it only deals with non-British people, judging by the websites (not sure where you are from, but assuming you are British by your writing!). From the photos I can tell where it is, just down a side road by the church near the old village. If you don't get any other responses and want to look at otherby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti nightlife - 13 years ago
Hi Lucy May is always a risk - it can be lovely and warm and sunbathing weather, or it can be quite chilly and rain. It will always be cool in the evenings in May. Can you go any later in the season? Also, it will be quiet in May as the season starts at the beginning of the month but places slowly open up throughout the month and it doesn't really get going until late May / early June. Re: Captains/Pauls place.Pefkohori.. - 13 years ago
The hotel is still there, and I imagine it will be open this year, but it is no longer with UK tour operators. The only places I have seen in Pefkohori that are offered by UK operators are Aeollos (which is lovely, much nicer than the Diana!), Alia Palace (posh, expensive hotel) and Anna Maria... Thomsons don't seem to do Pefkohori at all any more, which is a real shame.by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
Hi Mark & Kirsty I feel slightly like I am taking over this forum! I would suggest Hanioti or Pefkohori - they are next door to each other (about 5km apart) so if you stay in one you can easily visit the other. Hanioti is set round the village square with lots of shops, bars & tavernas. It gets pretty busy in peak season and would have a nice buzz in June. There are some lively bby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
I don't know the hotel at Chrousso but the beach there is lovely, and great for children. It is a very gentle slope into the water so you walk out about 20 metres before you get out of your depth. There are also water sports available and a trendy beach bar. Sani is quite a long way away, probably about 30-40 mins drive, maybe you could meet in the middle at say Afitos. There is a shuttle bby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
Sharon - which island have you been going to? You will probably find Halkidiki quite different to the islands as it is not all barren spaces and white washed buildings with blue shutters. It is very beautiful though, very green with loads of beaches and pretty villages. Have a look at some of the photos you can find online to set your expectations at the right level, none of us regulars wby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
Magoose - are you talking about Olympic Airlines or Olympic Holidays? If you are talking about the airline I'm afraid they don't fly from London to Thessaloniki anymore, they withdrew the route about 2 weeks ago! The only non-charter flights from London are BA, Easyjet & Ryanair.... (or Aegean via Athens)by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Anyone form the U K going to Halkidiki 2011 ? - 13 years ago
Yes, yes, yes! We have already been for the new year and were there a couple of weeks ago for the weekend. Back for the Easter weekend then 10 days in late June and 10 days in early Sept... Bring on the summer!by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Halkidiki advice required! - 13 years ago
I don't know Kriopigi very well but can give you some general advice. The village is built on a steep hill with the main road passing through the middle, a small square up towards the hills and a steep walk down to the beautiful beach. Most of the shops, bars & tavernas are on the road, but I couldn't tell you which are any good! I would say it is 100% worth hiring a car, there are lotby Carolinus - Halkidiki

Re: Greek Real Estate Agents - 13 years ago
We bought a maisonette in Pefkohori a couple of years ago and used Susan at Mesitiko (Pefkohori): She is barking mad and very disorganised but speaks fluent English and got the job done! We also saw some properties with Julie at Halkidiki Homes (Hanioti) who is English: [] And a friend of ours, Dimitris, runs Halkidiki Houses (Hanioti), he also speaks fluent English:by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Rivas Yacht Bar Afitos - 13 years ago
I had never heard of it so had a look at the website and it looks gorgeous! May have to visit it myself when I am there in 10 days time! I imagine it will be quite expensive, alcohol (particularly spirits) is expensive in Halkidiki, you would expect to pay 6 or 7 Euros for a vodka / gin etc and the swankier the bar, the higher the price!by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Just back from Hanioti - 13 years ago
Hi Steve Glad you had a good time, it's always good to hear first-timers to Halkidiki are falling in love with it as much as us regulars! Back there in 2.5 weeks - can't wait...by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Pella Studios, pefkohori - 13 years ago
Hi Mike As LJ said, I don't think they are with any UK companies now, but I have found a phone / fax number that you could try as they are still up and running: +30 23740-61662 As stated, the Aeollos apartments are just round the corner and are lovely, probably nicer than Pella (I have stayed in both)...by Carolinus - Halkidiki

Re: Cockney cafe - 13 years ago
I think it will be open this year. We went there last year and there was certainly no talk of it being closed, and the postings on the wall of the Cockney Cafe group on Facebook point to it being open... Hope that helps!by Carolinus - Halkidiki

Re: Menia Maria boat trip - 13 years ago
Nisi, thanks very much for the info, we will definitely get ourselves on the Mount Athos trip in July and hopefully catch up with Michalis as well. Do you reckon about 1.5 hours is enough time to drive from Pefkohori to Ormos Panagias (I drive Greek style i.e. quite fast!)? I remember the pistola from back in the day, can't believe Michalis was still doing it 10 years later! Did he still playby Carolinus - Halkidiki
How warm is it in the evening? - 13 years ago
I'm coming out to Pefkohori this weekend and have been looking at weather forecasts - it is looking pretty good! Quick question - how warm is it in the evening? Will I need a jacket or is a light cardi enough? I like to sit outside for drinks and / or dinner if it is warm enough, but don't want to be shivering. But on the other side I don't want to carry a jacket out with me (only bringingby Carolinus - Halkidiki

Menia Maria boat trip - 13 years ago
Hi there I just read on a different posting a note by Babycakes80 that detailed the boat trips including Captain Michalis and the Menia Maria. I used to rep out in Halkidiki in the early 90s and we used him back then and I would love to go on another of his trips and see him again. Does he do the Mount Athos trip as well as the fun cruise? If so, do you know where it goes from & how toby Carolinus - Halkidiki

Re: Weather - 14 years ago
I was there last weekend and the weather was lovely - warm and sunny in the day but cool if you were in the shade. Got a bit sunburnt sitting on the beach drinking coffee so I now have a dodgy T-shirt mark! The evenings were cold, you needed a jacket, and when we left on Monday it was cloudy so a lot cooler. Being Northern Greece the weather is not as 'guaranteed' as it is further south, buby Carolinus - Halkidiki
