General discussion and questions about Halkidiki.
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
I wouldn't worry either. However I have to disagree with Carolinus as to prices going up over last five years. We have been every year last five (and previous 15!) years, and 2007 and 2008 we were there for 8-9 months each year. We personally feel the prices have gone up the most during the latter part of last year and this year, and certainly fuel has ! It is almost the same as the UK nowby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
Chrisdaguru, don't worry too much. We took 400 euros, and drew out another 500 for ten days. BUT, we ate out all the time, and not always the cheaper places as we were only there for a short time. You can get good cheap food, see earlier postings of mine. We ate and drank well, but on odd days went to the Greek Kafenion for cheap meals (and great company, they are really friendly the old Gby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
When planning to eat in it is best to stick to Greek salads, fried cheese (if you have a small frying pan!), grilled or fried sardines, cheese xtipiti dip, taramasalata, olives, fruit, bread and, of course those gorgeous pitta breads you get with your giros - these are 2 euros for a pack of about 10 at the local Kassandrea market. All the salad stuff is cheap at the market, or even local supermaby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Medical services - 14 years ago
Hi Steve I can say from both sides of the coin. Having been on holiday there with holiday insurance, I had a problem with my back in that I could not move at all for a week, in total agony. The service via the insurance company was excellent. The doctor arrived at our apartment within an hour, I was kept under observation and attention, and after five days I had to walk to his surgery to proby Jane - Halkidiki

Yiassou Saki Missing Halkidiki already ! Thanks for the great car rental and of course the cold Mythos ! Look forward to seeing you all next year for a long term stay. Have a great summer Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: translation Greek to English - 14 years ago
I am not an expert, although I did do Greek to O Level ten years ago, I have long forgotten most of it. And of course, not having the exact spelling in Greek text can make so much difference as Greek words spelt almost the same, but pronounced differently are very common. But here goes If you are my mistake, I will pay If you are my mistake, I will make it again. Perhaps a hundred times Oby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Kriopigi - Alkion Studios - 14 years ago
HI Kerry, Jane here ! Stayed at Alkion a few years back and it was great. But you get, from memory which is fading fast, a fridge and two ring cooker and that is it. No kettle or toaster. The room was great though, very spacious and clean, and air con. They used a key card and you had to put it in for the elect to work, so we used our boots card when we went out to leave the air con on ! Woby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Travellers Cheques - 14 years ago
Haven't used TC in years. Best way is to either take cash, or if you don't like that way think of getting a Nationwide Flex Account. You get the highest rate (the business rate), no charges and there are ATMs everywhere. You only get free transactions in Europe now though, if you wanted to use it outside Europe it will cost 1% each time, but then generally you get above 1% more on the exchangeby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Just a few quetions please - 14 years ago
Hi, if you are taking your own snorkels try Loutra at the end of Kassandra peninsula. If you park at Villa Stasa (also a great place to eat, where you find mostly Greeks eat there, huge portions and good prices). Park in their car park, go down the steps towards the sea, there is also a cafe bar halfway down shaped like the bow of a boat. At the bottom you can swim off the rocks and we haveby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: yay!!! tickets are here!! - 14 years ago
Hi there, I think you will find that weather forecast is not for the Afitos in Halkidiki. We had the same thoughts before but a local Greek told us it was not Halkidiki. The best forecast, apart from Sakis of course ! is on www.meteo.gr. You can look for English translation by clicking on the flag, but the longest range one is in Greek. You need to hit on Makedonia, then Kassandra. Hopeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Things to do in and around Hanioti/Pefkohori/Polychrono - 14 years ago
I have been to many Greek islands too, but Halkidiki remains a favourite after many many years, it can be typically Greek in certain parts, you can find some lively places if you want without the lager louts, and some of the best beaches in Greece as a whole. I love to visit small islands sometimes, but to live long term like we have done Halkidiki is great as it has all these things and is alsoby Jane - Halkidiki

hairdresser, I have posted a few times but perhaps you missed it ! Eleni at Haniioti. Took us 12 years to find a good hairdresser and she is good, speaks English too.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Boats from Pefkochori/Kassandra to the Sporades?? - 14 years ago
Yes to the fruit and veg stalls, they are fantastic. We saw some more cattle this year, on Kassandra somewhere but not sure where now ! Not been to Kavala, but been to Mount Athos by road many years ago, before the road was actually worthy of the name ! At one point we wondered what to do as the road disappeared. Much better nowadays and we went almost all the way there last year but stopby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
About five mins from Hanioti to Polichrono, and five mins Polichrono to Kriopigi by car. All villages are -pretty close.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Boats from Pefkochori/Kassandra to the Sporades?? - 14 years ago
Skopelos is lovely, a typical Greek island and very pretty. Gorgeous harbour area with all shops set on a hill at the back. As far as I can remember only one sandy beach though, as like most islands the beaches can be a bit pebbly or rocky. To be honest if you are only there a few weeks I would go for Sithonia, Vourvourous is lovely lots of coves and lovely scenic views, large boulders and rockby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
Good hairdresser is Eleni in Hanioti, took us 12 years to find her ! Prices about the same as UK. Don't know any places in Polichrono. Depends on what you want to eat - Greek or English. There are many many Greek tavernas which are beautiful and authentic, but the ones I know are not near Polichrono. Near to Polichrono, if you want something really different and Greek there is Anthoulas inby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
Lidl is on the road between Athitos and Kallithea. Not sure what is in Polichrono as we do not stay there, but I am sure you will get some replies on their supermarkets from someone else. Massoutis and Arbanitithis are both good supermarkets, we like to use the smaller ones when we live over near Skioni.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
I usually drink bacardi and coke, but as Carolinus says, 5 euros a drink, and even though a good measure goes down just as quickly! So when in Greece I usually drink Amstel which is pretty cheap, or wine (local wine is only about 4 euros half a litre) and of course ouzo and tsipouro are really cheap. Occasionally, I even drink soft drinks but not that often!! When there long term I buy wineby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Prices - 14 years ago
OK, we didn't go to a lot of tourist places and I am not sure where you are staying. But here goes. Meal at Possidi for instance, calamari plate, stuffed aubergine, cuc and tomato salad, bread, sardines plate, large Amstel and glass of Tsipouro cost us 35 euros. Meal at Villa stasa, Loutra, octopus grilled, cuc and tom salad (can't do without this !!), bread, chicken snitzel, deep fried couby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Boats from Pefkochori/Kassandra to the Sporades?? - 14 years ago
Alanapp, not too sure ! We have been many times to Pefkochori and last year we noticed two boats. We enquired with both and it seemed both went daily (think it is probably from mid June to end August) over to Sithonia, but you didn't get too long over there. The other one went off and stopped for swimming etc., going onto Sithonia again not for long. There used to be a timetable etc. printed aby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Boats from Pefkochori/Kassandra to the Sporades?? - 14 years ago
I think that stopped some years ago ! Whilst staying in Halkidiki some years ago we went to Skopelos, but we had to travel down to Volos for the ferry. We managed to go to Chios from Thessaloniki. From Pefkochori I think you will just find it is the boats over to Sithonia. Two years ago there was talk about a flying dolphin service from the newly extended harbour in Nea Skioni, but when wby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: update? - 14 years ago
Try the above link to the greek meteo site. It usually proves quite accurate and hopefully I got the exact address for you without you having to read Greek. I do believe there is now an English translation available on the site.by Jane - Halkidiki
Kriopigi Car Rental - 14 years ago
Excellent value from Sakis, yet again. Car was there on arrival at Thessaloniki and after a brief exchange of information off we went to Halkidiki with a promise to call in later that day to pay, excellent service which meant we could get to our destination and a bit of a rest before having to complete all the formalities. Car was great, almost new, very reliable and a great price. Sakby Jane - Halkidiki

Just had a few days over in Halkidiki and was great to see Tony and Debbie (and of course Thannasi) again. Made us very welcome and thanks Debbie for all your help with our enquiries, it was very much appreciated. Still good value and must admit we had two visits in 8 days for bacon sandwiches, something we only do very occasionally when over there for longer. Scrumptious! If anyone isby Jane - Halkidiki
Sweet Coffee Shop - 14 years ago
Great to see our friends Morfi and Sakis again. Food as good as usual and welcome as warm. Had some great new wines in this year too ! The balcony area has made a difference and gives you the chance to get away from the noise of the road and gives a pleasant view over the sea. See you again soon Morfi, all the best til next yearby Jane - Halkidiki
Our Visit to Halkidiki, Kriopigi and all surrounding areas - 14 years ago
We have just returned from a shorter trip than usual while looking for accommodation for next year. What we found is that eating out is getting increasingly expensive, and this is not at tourist places but at places where the Greeks eat and that are out of the way of most tourist villages. On average it was 35 euros for a meal for two consisting of about 4 or 5 plates, at least 2-3 of which wby Jane - Halkidiki
