General discussion and questions about Halkidiki.
Hotel Argo Siviris - 17 years ago
Anyone going over to Halkidiki by their own arrangements, try this hotel in Siviris. We used it many years ago twice under the Thomson banner. English tour operators then pulled out of Siviris and the German ones moved in. However, you can contact the hotel direct and get a good rate for an air conditioned room (some are one bedroom studios, most are two room apartments sleeping 2-4). Basicby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Car hire from the airport - 17 years ago
We used Avis this year and they were great. We have used Economy car rentals last year and they were great. Our family has used Kriopigi cars and they were more than happy. We onlyused Avis instead of Economy Car Rentals this year as we paid via Thomas Cook credit card points and that was their car hire partner. Cheers Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: nervous - 17 years ago
Hi Sandra, we are just back from Greece and our good friends there own the Sweet Coffee Shop in Kriopigi. Give it a try, it is a taste of the real Greece and is frequented by a lot of Greek and tourists in the know. You will be made to feel most welcome by Morfy and Sakis. Say hello again from Jane and Martyn please! I think you have picked a good place to go alone, it is very friendly aroundby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village Latest Ratings!!!! - 17 years ago
Gosh, me too ! I don't have children but I do remember well a business class flight from Dubai which was the end of our 25th wedding anniversary trip. There were some people who had been upgraded (and no problem there, but surely you don't give free upgrades to people with a herd of children!). Anyway, the parent sort of lounged about with their feet on the tables etc., whilst the children ranby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village, Paliouri - 17 years ago
Sorry Dianne about mentioning the horseflies, but forewarned if forarmed, or in your case for(ty) bottles of repellant ! Seriously, stop worrying. You cant do anything about it if it is one of those years, just try and ignore them. Don't let it spoil your holiday preparations. Once you see the area and Paliori old Greek town you will be more than happy. Also, either take with you or buy aby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: U.K to Greece - Car & Ferry advice needed! - 17 years ago
Hi, I can't give you prices at the moment as I am in middle of packing and about to set off for Greece. However, we went to Halkidiki three years on the trot, for 9 months at a time. The route we took was drive from Derbyshire to Dover, ferry over to Calais. Stayed overnight just outside Calais. Next day drove to Strasbourg, stayed overnight. Next day drove to Sirmione on Lake Garda and staby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village, Paliouri - 17 years ago
Fi, just another thought, and I do not wish to scare anyone, but generally in June (why we go in June I dont know, it has just always been so !) you do get targetted by horseflies, known locally as davanos. They inject a needle into you and suck blood, ugh. Sorry, but it is as well to be aware of these. I am not sure why they only target in June, but it has happened in Skopelos, Chios and Haby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village, Paliouri - 17 years ago
Hi Fi, well we have been all over Greece and I must say wasps have always been there ! I can remember well because until we lived there for three years I was a terrible baby about even one wasp, and I used to be running off down the beach all the time, not a pretty sight ! Having been going over 30 years to Halkidiki and lived there three years, I would say that usually you get a bad year eveby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Pefkohori - 17 years ago
There are stray dogs all over Halkidiki. Just try to feel sorry for them as they eke out a living amongst the tourists! They always seem to be thirsty to me, so I carry some water round for them. I have never come across a nasty one, and although I am a dog lover anyway, I don't think there is any need to feel afraid. My sister in law stayed with us and she is terrified of dogs, but she was fiby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: The Old Tavern, Hanioti - 17 years ago
I can't wait for my bread and Greek Salad ! We too used to live over there for 9 months of the year, for three years. Hope to do it again very soon, probably next year. We love sitting around a table eating and debating, part of the holiday. Jane (half Greek, my dad's family were from Chios although he was born in London)by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village, Paliouri - 17 years ago
No problem MancLass ! I was a bit puzzled til I saw your second message ! No, having lived over there for three years we know lots of people with apartments, and also get offers as this year from the place in Siviris. I like Siviris very much, we nearly managed to rent a beautiful apartment there, but it fell through. Will try again this year !!by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Afitos ? - 17 years ago
Such sad people obviously have nothing better to do than ruin other peoples enjoyment. I just ignore them now, the less response they get the better I think ! Off to Halk very soon, 5 sleeps away !by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: The Old Tavern, Hanioti - 17 years ago
Jo Jo, firstly I have to say I have never been to the Old Tavern as we have our own favourite places we like to eat where we have been going for many years. However, as Amanda rightly says, it is a cover charge and it is charged at every place we have been to, including Gusto Italiano. I am not sure of amounts, it usually does not consitute a high charge and is to cover the bread, service etby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village, Paliouri - 17 years ago
Hi Dianne, if she means those coil things that you light and they emit a smoke plume, then you can get them over there much cheaper. Personally we use a plug in mossie thingie ! We bought it over there and you buy refills. Plug them in and they give out anti mozzie "fumes, for want of a better word". They are completely safe and we found them to be very effective when we lived oveby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village, Paliouri - 17 years ago
Fi, you can get taxis from the airport. If you do a search on this site you will come up with the prices very recently from people asking. Not sure, but certainly no more than 80-90 euros tops. May be even less, cant remember. Don't pay First Choice silly prices. The taxis are available outside and there are always plenty. Or hire a car? Very easy to get to Halkidiki although the Greek driby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village Latest Ratings!!!! - 17 years ago
Fi and Diane, I totally agree. I would not have been going back for over 30 years to Halkidiki if it was full on entertainment everywhere, that would put me off totally. Just do your own thing, enjoy the culture and have a great relaxing time. After 22 years of hotels, 3 years living there and now five years of doing our own thing booking apartments direct there must be something that keepsby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Kriopigi, Hanioti or Kalithea? - 17 years ago
Kriopigi car hire, or Economy Car Rentals as advertised on this site. Both are good, we have used both in the past. Go to see Morfy and Sakis at the Sweet Coffee Shop in Kriopigi for delicious savoury and sweet crepes, ice creams, drinks, coffees, specialty teas, sandwiches, toasties and more. They are our very good friends and will make you feel very welcome. If you do hire a car try to viby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: snorkeling/scuba diving - 17 years ago
Thanks Roy, leave it with me and I will see if I can get an appointment before we leave, although it is a bit tight now. May call in anyway and check it all out with you. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Just got back from Kriopigi - 17 years ago
Too quiet for you? It depends what you want from your holiday. With three kids (you dont say how old they are), there is the pool at the hotel. The rooms are lovely and mostly "quiet"!, as the hotel is in a slightly secluded position. It is only 5-10 mins walk uphill (stressed, uphill) to the main road which has most of Kriopigis bars, restaurants, tavernas, supermarkets and shops oby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Just got back from Kriopigi - 17 years ago
I don't know either hotel, but I can definitely recommend Alkion hotel in Kriopigi. If you can change to that perhaps?by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Outdoor markets - 17 years ago
OK Graham. We arrive 15 June and are staying in Siviris, but we will be at the Sweet Coffee Shop most days and/or evenings. Hubby is a big chap, mind you I am not that small, lol !! Quite often you might see me behind the counter mixing up some crepe mixture when they get busy..... We stay til 2 July, then we go to Thessaloniki for four nights as we want to explore a bit more. Funnily enouby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Outdoor markets - 17 years ago
There is also a great market at Nea Moudania, which is about half an hour from Kriopigi on the way back to Thessaloniki. Not sure what day, will ask Kerry again ! The two markets are on different days, I think one is on a Wed and one on a Thursday, but not sure which way round. The Nea Moudania one is huge. Lots of clothes, shoes, veg, fruit, household and much more. You can park one end anby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: snorkeling/scuba diving - 17 years ago
Roy, I have been doing some research and feel that I may not be fit enough to dive due to having scoliosis. From what I have read the tanks are quite heavy and I do have back pain and problems. Also I believe there can be a problem with lung function. Perhaps snorkelling may be a better idea? Wht do you think. Re: snorkeling/scuba diving - 17 years ago
Hi Roy, tried that email but it didnt work, for prices. We are staying in Siviris this time. I would be most interested in the intro dive 1-2 hours as a treat for my 50th birthday. Will check with doctor, but can see no problems other than would you have a wetsuit to fit the larger sized lady ! ? Thanks Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Kriopigi - 17 years ago
We go 15 June for three weeks, so try to call into the Sweet Coffee Shop owned by our good friends Morfy and Sakis. Great crepes, savoury and sweet, sandwiches, toasties, ice creams and chocolate sweets to die for, drinks, teas, coffees etc etc etc, and very very friendly people. I am sure you will like the Alkion, it is very nice and friendly and lovely setting with nice pool area. The onlyby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather - 17 years ago
Don't worry Lyn, it will be fine. We have good friends over there and they say it has been hot for about a month now, and getting hotter. You are bound to get some rain storms or showers, to be honest it is a relief from the heat, and it generally rains overnight mostly. We have heard that it is currently about 26-28 degrees. I think the local forecast should be better. I mean, look at hby Jane - Halkidiki
