Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
Thank you for the photos. My memories of the lovely forest between Skioni (where we lived) and Hanioti seem set to be lost for a while. What devastation to such a lovely area. Anyway we are coming over November to see for ourselves and look for somewhere to rent next year. Nice to see some actual photos though, puts it more into perspective and shows how bad it really was. Thanks againby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Sakis, please tell Morfy - 17 years ago
Thanks Sakis, Morfy phoned me tonight and I can now rest assured all is OK ! We are coming over in Nov for a few days, will you be around for car hire then or should we go with someone in Thessaloniki? Cheers Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Sakis, please tell Morfy - 17 years ago
No, Morfy is my friend in Halkidiki and has nothing to do with BBC or reporting, she owns a Greek Coffee Shop.by Jane - Halkidiki
Sakis, please tell Morfy - 17 years ago
Sakis at Acropolis, please ask Morfy to text me. I seem to be unable to get hold of her lately, and if I text Sakis I never get a reply, so not sure if his number has changed. We phoned after the fire, twice and spoke with Morfy, but nothing heard for well over a week now. Thanks if you can help me. Jane and Martyn, we want to know family all OKby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: HELP - STRANDED PUPPY IN HANIOTI - 17 years ago
Dave and Bev, call Julie, she lives in Kalandra and rescues and rehomes dogs and puppies. If she is not too full she will be pleased to help. We found four puppies in June, one with a hernia, only about five weeks old. She took them in for us, and they are now rehomed in Belgium. I can give you her telephone number if you email me jane@onecal&by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: driving to Greece - 17 years ago
Try www dot hellasferries dot com, they are very helpful. When we drove over for three years on the trot, we used Paleologos Shipping. You can book on line www dot ferries dot gr / booking which is under the Paleologos umbrella. We booked on line, they emailed the confirmation etc and sent the tickets via courier to us. We went from Venice to Igoumenitsa first time, thereafter we went fromby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Out and about - 17 years ago
Hi Sarah Thessaloniki is a beautiful city we think. It has lots of historical sites, a brilliant museum, some lovely old churches and some gorgeous shops, both expensive and cheaper. Nice delicatessen near the old market. The old market is just a typical eastern type market. Lots of fish (to eat !) in the fish side, meat, corks, olive oil, herbs, all sorts of interesting things. A nice placeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Are people trying to stop us visting Hanioti??? - 17 years ago
Thanks Hannah. Not affecting me as we have already been over this year, but I did not want people to be put off by no response or untrue reports, as Halkidiki is a lovely place. Enjoy yourself over there, do you live there or long hols? Either way, wish I was back there. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Are people trying to stop us visting Hanioti??? - 17 years ago

Re: Are people trying to stop us visting Hanioti??? - 17 years ago
Thanks Robbie, I almost got all of that with my rusty Greek, but where did you find it so quickly !!? Anyway, with my rusty Greek and your ability to find translations, we have found out some news. I just wish some of the Halkidiki regular posters would get on here and confirm or deny, and at least help the outgoing holidaymakers prepare themselves.by Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Are people trying to stop us visting Hanioti??? - 17 years ago
Just wait to hear from someone over there, it may not be that bad. As for telling you something, dont worry. Our wedding day was horrendous winds and rain, and I lost my veil down the churchyard. We are still together 31 years later !!!! Will keep a look out for any news for you.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Flood in Pefkohori - 17 years ago
Vicky, I have found some news, see post about scaring people to visit Hanitoi where I have replied.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Are people trying to stop us visting Hanioti??? - 17 years ago
I have just found some news, on a Greek news site. Unfortunately it is only in Greek. Whilst I can read Greek I am a bit rusty, but I gather there has been a lot of rain today in the whole of Kassandra, and some shops and houses on ground level have been flooded, with ash washed towards the sea. The article is quite long and I cannot translate it all as I dont have time tonight, but PLEASE somby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: What is an infinity pool? - 17 years ago
I think they are the ones that the water flows over the edge, so that when viewed the pool looks like it doesnt have any edge to it, i.e. infinite. In some hotels they actually face towards the sea and the pool looks like it goes straight into the sea. Think so anyway.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Help - I need to call Greece!!! - 17 years ago
00 30, then mobile number. usually starts with 6972 or 6932 ? Does this helpby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Flood in Pefkohori - 17 years ago
Static, where did you get this news from. I have checked all the Greek news sites I can find, and I can read Greek, and there is nothing mentioned. None of my friends in Halkidiki either Greek or English have contacted me to confirm this either.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Flood in Pefkohori - 17 years ago
I have heard nothing from my Greek friends on this, and I have just checked all the Greek news sites, even the ones in Greek, and can see nothing mentioned. Who told you this Sarah?by Jane - Halkidiki
Thessaloniki info for Lison - 17 years ago
I was surprised and upset to read you thought Thessaloniki was dirty and not very interesting. This is the second city of Greece and we have always found it to be so interesting and full of character and history. OK there may be dirty parts (not visited them though) but there are in any city, I would imagine London and indeed many other capitals cities is not that brilliant in parts. I have heaby Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Car hire in halkidiki - 17 years ago
Try the car hire advertised on this site too, economy car rentals. We found them to be very good as well and you can get a quote on line. I would have said drive round Kassandra and see the beautiful pine forests !! Still would be nice to visit Paliori old village, and I would dearly love to know if Villa Stasa at Loutra is OK, it has been there 28+ years. Sithonia, great but a very long dby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Mosquito's?? - 17 years ago
citronella sprays, available locally are good. Best we found though was Johnsons OFF, also available locally in the supermarkets. Nothing works 100%, they always manage to fine some minute little spot you didnt spray or oil though !by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village, Paliouri - 17 years ago
Spoke with a friend who lives in Kalandra near Skioni. She says Skioni, Agia Paraskevi, Loutra, Pefkohori all affected in the woodlands. For your information Agai Paraskevi is not that far away from Paliori, but I do not know anything for sure about Paliori. I am phoning her again tonight and will probably have more info then. Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
Morfy is a respectable person too ! ! I am not sure if she was describing what it is like in Kriopigi with smoke, or in nearby Hanioti, Polichrono etc. What I am sure is that she said there were a few more fires this morning near Kassandra Palace hotel and kalandra, mola kaliva, and ten planes brought in to put them out.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Fire in Kassandra - YOUR REPORTS HERE - try to help other people - 17 years ago
I do not want to be alarmist, and I was hoping all was OK, but I have spoken with Morfy at the Sweet Coffee Shop in Kriopigi this morning and she is quite distressed, and said there were a few more smaller fires occuring today and about ten planes trying to put them out, including around Kassandra Palace hotel, Mola Kaliva and Kassandrino area. She has said that most hotels are almost empty anby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Traveling to Halkidiki soon???? - 17 years ago
Vicky, just go and enjoy what you can. There are so many conflicting reports, and we have news from our Greek friends in Kriopigi too. I am sure it is terrible, in places. I am also sure that you will have a good wedding. Just go with the flow. If we were there, there is no way I would come home (mostly I suppose as I would want to help our Greek friends in their moment of need), but also becby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Litsa appartments - Fourka - 17 years ago
Thanks Sara, good luck. I start my course soon and hope to live over there from 2008 again. So plenty of time for you to do your teaching and get fed up ! before I arrive. Seriously though Halkidiki is a huge place and I am going more for the private market anyway. I am sure we will not be fighting over this !! Have a great time, and thanks for replying Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: 3g coverage - 17 years ago
It is opposite Zytheion beer house. If you park in the large car park - follow directions - then you will see everybody walking down one street towards the square. Just before the end near the square Zytheion is on your right, and just past on your right on the corner of a small sidestreet is the internet cafe - well it is a bar actually with about 6 laptops now, and I think it was 5 euros an hby Jane - Halkidiki
