Re: Purchase washing machine - 17 years ago
Thanks Beppe, we will try Praktirer, really we will. We go end March for 3 weeks to get set and ready for our three year stint. We had already booked for USA in June for a month and paid, so unfortunately ! (not really, we will enjoy it) we have to go on this holiday first. However we then go August til December, and we are going superfast ferry and taking our dog too, a labrador too ! We havby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Purchase washing machine - 17 years ago
Beppe, sorry forgot we have friends who own a cafe and therefore have a Makro card. Kotsopoulos we bought a few small items from and they were reasonable. I still say negotiate locally with Samaras or similar and you might get a good deal. They are obviously wanting to get local business and were extremely friendly and flexible with us. Re: Purchase washing machine - 17 years ago
When we lived there before we bought our washing machine from Kassandrea town from a shop called Samaras. It was more expensive than Thessaloniki but delivery was free. Also he always gave us a discount on whatever price was displayed and it was not too bad at all. In fact we bought a TV, Video recorder, coffee table and fan off him and got good prices. Thessaloniki has a Makro, not been yetby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: fourka - 17 years ago
Hi Jeff, hopefully Kay will get used to the dogs. Shame we are not there when you go as our dog is the most soft, loving labrador you could ever get and even my husbands sister who has always been afraid of dogs, is OK around her. However she also gets asma (spelling !) so that poses another problem. Will write when we get back. Cant wait to go, we will go April to November 2008 and 2009, so mby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: fourka - 17 years ago
only 6 weeks for me, hehehehe ! We will miss meeting you this year as we go til 17 April, then come back to UK and set off in the car 3 August. Have a great time. Might actually see you next year if you go, we will be there April til Nov.by Jane - Halkidiki

Re: Weather in October - 17 years ago
Elizabeth I sent you a private message but not sure if it worked or not. Let me know. If not I will post message here. Basically though we are there Aug til Dec this year, so if you email me nearer the time I will have found out what is open and what it not. After all we need to eat too. We know loads of places open all year, but you need transport. Hanioti is tourist driven, but should stillby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Weather in October - 17 years ago
Not quite everything, which makes it a nice time to visit if you want real Greek hospitality from the local places still open, and have beaches all to yourself. We may have been lucky, but for our three years living there Oct was lovely weather. Not boiling hot, but lovely and warm. We visited in Nov last year for a week, 20 deg and sunny. No tourists in sight and local places open to eat.by Jane - Halkidiki
Where are you Kerry? - 17 years ago
Happy Christmas, but where are you? I have sent you emails and no reply which is very strange. Perhaps you are on holiday, lucky you. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: xmas - 17 years ago
Kali spera Jeff Potadia near Skioni, hehe. Oh well now you know where it is. Sorry didnt realise you were sort of confined to Fourka. Well we are in Derbyshire, but I am not sure I can rely on our NHS, in fact I think I know I cant after my experiences. Hope you go on OK in Notts, dont know much about it there even though not far from us. Have a great Christmas, hope you get to Halk nby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: xmas - 17 years ago
Jeff, Mola Kaliva where is it !!! Go past Siviris, FOURKA, past turn down to Possidi and Kalandra and it is next village. About 2 miles away from Nea Skioni ! Tut tut Jeff. Well we are going August next year, but the folloiwng two years the plan is to go March til Dec, so we may get to meet then. All the best, sorry to hear about your health scare. Happens as you get older as I well know. Mby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: xmas - 17 years ago
Merry Christmas Jeff. We now have a place to rent for three years. Unfortunately we can only get over March for three weeks, then August til Dec next year, but worth it as the place we have rented is lovely. We may yet get to meet up ! Our new place is at Mola Kaliva. Happy New Year to you too.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Driving to Greece - 17 years ago
No sorry Beppe, I am English lady with husband and range rover, but we lived in Mola Kaliva, on Kassandra. All our Greek friends live on Kassandra, so that is where our new rental house is too. Have a great trip over, we have now secured our booking for next yearby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Driving to Greece - 17 years ago
Thanks Beppe. We also know Greece very well, we lived in Halkidiki for three years and have been going there over thirty years! However, we know the problems with dogs over there and that is why I am so pleased to have found Superfast to allow the dog in the cabin. It makes it much less stressful for me and the dog ! Take care of your dogs and enjoy your stay. What a lovely place to have a boby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Driving to Greece - 17 years ago
Yes it is Superfast, 50 euros each way for each dog. Special outside cabins with wipe clean floors but otherwise the same as the other quality cabins. When are you going? My dog is a labrador retreiver too !by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Driving to Greece - 17 years ago
Found the info I need now thanks, so no need for any replies. If anyone else wants some info re taking a dog I can provide some now. Travelling in same cabin on ship, not in seperate kennels.by Jane - Halkidiki
Driving to Greece - 17 years ago
We have driven over to Halkidiki three years and we always went Derby to Calais stopped overnight, then Calais to Strasbourg stopped overnight, then Strasbourg to Lake Garda stopped overnight, then Lake Garda to Venice, then ferry to Patras and drive up to Halk. However we now want to take our dog with us. I am worried about the ferry from Venice as I am not sure about the safety for dogs on bby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Accomadation in December - 17 years ago
Just got back from Halkidiki. There are a few places open, Kriopigi Beach Hotel and Blue Bay on Kassandra, also Hotel Petra which is very near to Afitos. Few bars open in Pefkohori, Taverna Villa Stassa open in Loutra weekends. Other giros places open. Weather was glorious, about 20 deg C average and sunny apart from first wet day. Loved it, very quiet and different to the business of sumby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti or pefkhori help please!!!! - 17 years ago
Have never stayed inHanioti, but did live over there for three summers 1999-2001 and been every year for hols since. So I would say that if it is better class than Angelo it must be OK especially as Hanioti will be fairly quiet mid May. Having said that it may be quite quiet, I am sure you will enjoy it and there will be less hassle for beach beds etc. The weather in May is unreliable, but havby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Accomadation in December - 17 years ago
Nikos, that is great news if we ever have problems finding somewhere out of season. Thanks for the info, will keep this for future use just in case.by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Accomadation in December - 17 years ago
I think you will be lucky to find anwhere in Nikiti or Kassandra as they all shut in the winter months. Same applies to this website really, there are not a lot of readers and postings during the winter months, not until we all start looking forward to our summer in Halkidki! There may be some apartments where people actually live there and dont just move there for the summer months. You woulby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: KRIOPIGI, POLIHRONO, HANIOTI, PEFKOHORI: LATEST WEATHER FORECAST !! - 17 years ago
Gary, it wasnt that good here (in Derbyshire anyhow), we had lots of rain over 2-3 days. Everyone always says that when you get back, and even more so if you had great weather abroad as they say, don't know why you went it was lovely here ! I would rather have rain in Greece than UK, at least there is still the beach, food and people.........by Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Dogs and other animals in Halkidiki - 17 years ago
Sophie, I agree. If you look at previous postings by me under this subject I mentioned cats, donkeys etc. I trekked over about four fields one year to feed a donkey I felt sorry for. One that was in the daytime tethered in the hot sun with a pack on its back and no shade or water. The Greeks I told laughed and said they were used to it. But my point that I made to them was, WHY should they bby Jane - Halkidiki

Jim, please email me jane at onecal dot co dot uk and I will give you the number of Julie who helped us. Not sure how she is fixed after the fire, but you can at least ask her. I know how upsetting it is, just try your best, that is all you can do. We always drove round with dog food in the boot for possible starving strays ! Even when we lived there three years, and then of course it was eveby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: october? - 17 years ago
I think you will find most places still open then. They usually started to shut when we were there around mid October. Hanioti in particular should still have most places open early October as it is a tourist destination village, whereas further afield like Paliori you may find only one local taverna open. HAve a great time. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: weather in may - 17 years ago
Mostly ! As with anywhere nowadays you cannot be 100% sure. In June this year it was horrible and wet til mid June apparently. We arrived 15 June and it got hotter by the day, and we only ever got rain in the evening. Anyway, when we lived there for three years May was usually very nice. The first year it was very hot, the second year we arrived 1 May and it was quite cold - 17 deg C. Theby Jane - Halkidiki

All I know Terry is that they are terrible at using the email system ! I usually resort to phoning them, I have mobiles, shop number and home. If you want them email me jane@onecal.co.uk and I will let you have them. Janeby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: october? - 17 years ago
Weather in October can be mixed. I can only speak from living over there from April til end October for three years from 1999-2001. We got what we think were really good Octobers. In fact one year when we left for the UK from Patras it was 32 deg C at midnight ! Usually though it was around 65-75 right through the month, some days were a bit cloudier than others, but never totally overcastby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Fire in Hanioti - 17 years ago
Thunderer, you seem the only person I have heard of who does not think the locals are friendly. Could it perhaps be your attitude? With going over 28 years to Halkidiki, to many resorts and areas, and living there for three years, I can honestly say that most, and I say most as you are never going to get 100% welcome anywhere in the world, locals were friendly. It does help if you approachby Jane - Halkidiki
Re: Chrousso Village Latest Ratings!!!! - 17 years ago
Wasps can be prolific anywhere, in Greece, Spain, Italy wherever. It really depends on the year as to how prolific they are. We lived in Halkidiki for three years right through from April to end October, and only one of those years was bad for wasps, and it was indeed very bad. We were often driven inside by them. They were a nuisance right from late June, but we didnt get driven inside til Seby Jane - Halkidiki
