Re: taxi price, thessaloniki to polichrono and back? - 11 years ago
Hey Shirls&Baz - how are you? When are you going this year? We have trips booked May, July & Sept! Mancrunch - we have a friend in Pefkohori who has a people carrier and does private airport transfers. He is an English guy who lives out there, I can give you his contact details if you are interested. Let me know and I can send you a private message. I'm not sure what he charges as we aby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Nick @ Horseshoe Bar Hanioti - 11 years ago
Just to wade in with my two pennies worth - I don't know about the Germans, but Brits aren't coming because 90% of the UK travel agents have pulled out of the area so it is difficult unless people travel independently (which a lot of the regulars do). I have been travelling to Halkidiki for 20 years having worked as a rep there in the early 90s and I now have a holiday home in Pefkohori and goby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Food Costs - 11 years ago
Re food prices, generally eating out is pretty cheap, it is alcohol (particularly spirits) that can be expensive. Main courses range between about 5-10 Euros depending on what & where you eat. Most Greek food like moussaka, stuffed peppers, calamari etc is cheaper and fish & steaks are more. We budget 50 Euros per person per day, but that covers EVERYTHING. Where are you staying? I don't know about nude beaches but could tell you a bit about clubbing, but it depends where you will be...by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: August Weather in Sithonia - 11 years ago
August is usually very hot - high 30s in the day and warm at night. Certainly not cold on the beach!! It may rain maybe for a few hours, as nobody knows with the weather nowadays, but if it does rain it will not last. This is the hottest (and busiest) time of the year... I have just got back today and we went to the beach every day and swam in the sea, it was roasting!by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Bars and Resturants in Hanioti - 11 years ago
Hi Nick & Joanne There are lotd of nice places to eat & drink in Hanioti, mainly based around the square. A few I would recommend would be: Erodios - a bit away from the square (near some of the hotels) - great extensive menu of Greek & international food Kassandras - off one of the side roads - more upmarket (reflected in the price) but lovely roof terrace and great food Storby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Kalithea to Afitos - 11 years ago
From the centre of Kalithea to the centre of Afitos is about 5km. There is a taxi rank in Kalithea (outside the Alpha Bank, on the road to Kassandria) but I am not sure how much it would cost. I hope that helps...by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: 16-21 may, where to go in Halkidiki? - 11 years ago
You have picked a pretty early time for anywhere in Greece (not just Halkidiki) and the season is just ramping up, but there will be people around, just not like it gets in July / August (which can be hell as the beaches get rammed!). Thessaloniki is a lovely city with some great nightlife (as stated on TA) but gets very hot in the spring / summer. If you fancy the Hanioti or Pefkohori optionby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: 16-21 may, where to go in Halkidiki? - 11 years ago
Hi, I saw your post on Trip Advisor and the responses you received there and I thought I would offer a different perspective. May is very much the start of the tourist season so Halkidiki will be quiet. Being a city, Thessaloniki will definitely be much busier with much more year-round nightlife, but if you want to get more of a 'beach holiday' feeling I would highly recommend going down to Haby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: hotel diane, hotel rigakis, pefkohori - 12 years ago
Suzette, you will get a HUGE surprise, it is twice the size! I was a rep there 20 years ago (and now have a holiday home and go all the time) and it has changed so much over the years. Australia supermarket is still there, but I'm not sure what hotel you are referring to as there is no hotel next to it, just shops. The Diana is round the corner, maybe that is the one, and Kahlua is still there, nby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti - 12 years ago
Can't believe he got married and didn't invite us - how rude! Hope he's OK after his op... Shame to miss you, have a fab time and I'm sure we'll see you next year (and the year after...!)by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti - 12 years ago
Hi Shirls & Baz, what dates are you going? We will be there 13th July for 10 days so may still catch you... (plus the first week of June!) C xby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti - 12 years ago
There are quite a few day trips you can do - fun boat trips, a boat trip to see Mount Athos (the 3rd peninsula that is covered in monasteries), coach trip around Sithonia (the middle peninsula), coach trip to Thessaloniki (the city about 100km away, where the airport is), Petralona caves to name a few. Have a look at this website to get some ideas: You could also hire a car and drive roundby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: hanioti - 12 years ago
Late May is a lovely time to go, it won't be as busy and buzzy as the peak season (July / August) but you will see Halkidiki at it's best. There is basically one long beach running all the way down the side of the peninsula so plenty of choice. The beach in Hanioti is a mix of sand and tiny pebbles with crystal clear waters. There are sunbeds & brollies along the beach, as well as waterspoby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: prices in greece at the mo x - 12 years ago
I don't think it helps to be so negative. There are less and less Brits in Halkidiki (and as you say, it is getting overrun with Eastern Europeans) but when Brits come on the forums to ask questions they get put off by some of the responses! Yes I love Halkidiki, and maybe I do have rose tinted glasses towards the place (I am biased as I have a holiday home there and go out about 6 times per yby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: prices in greece at the mo x - 12 years ago
I would agree, it is about the same as last year. Eating out is still good value, what is expensive is alcohol, particularly spirits. People talk about price rises but it is still cheaper than the UK, the days of cheap bucket-shop holidays have gone. We spend about 50 Euros each per day, but that is eating every meal out, petrol and drinking every night! Where in Pefkohori are you staying? Itby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: polychrono ammos studion - 12 years ago
I don't know the Ammos Studios but Polichrono is about 15-20kms from Fourka. Polichrono is on the east coast of the Kassandra peninsula and Fourka is on the west - it would take you about 20 mins to drive there.by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: car hire polychrono - 12 years ago
I don't know any car hire firms in Polichrono (although I am sure there will be some) but I recently used Kriopigi Cars who are based in Kriopigi (obviously!) which is about 5km away, but they do deliver to your hotel or the airport. They were very efficient and good value, this is their website and if you look for postings (particularly weather forecasts) on this forum from Sakis, he is the ownby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Medusa Hotel Kriopigi - 12 years ago
Hi Jayne HalkidikiLover is painting a rather negative picture. I was there last week and the weather was glorious, it can be very unpredictable in late Sept but I was there last year 17-27 Sept and we had 5 boiling days and 4 a bit cloudy but still warm (and it got nice again on our last day). As they said, be prepared i.e. take cardis and warmer clothes just in case, and as the season is endiby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Just got back from Kriopigi - 12 years ago
Hi Vanessa As Mr Steve says, most places are closing down in Oct (if not earlier) and the weather can be quite cold. If you want a very quiet holiday that doesn't rely on glorious sunshine then there are other things to do like walking and sightseeing (with a car), but if you want a beach holiday I wouldn't recommend Oct. The transfer from the airport is very expensive nowadays - it is abouby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: HALKIDIKI ASK YOUR QUESTIONS - 12 years ago
Hi Melleboo If I were you I would start this question as a new thread. There is lots of info on this forum about weddings - you can get married in Kassandria or Hanioti town hall then have the reception wherever you like - nice taverna or hotel... Have a look at other postings.by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: EXCHANGE RATE - 12 years ago
I don't know what the rate is out there at the moment, but you generally get a better rate in resort than you do here...by Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: prices in pefkohori and hanioti - 12 years ago
Hi Mike I cam back from Pefkohori on Monday and I would say that drinks (spirits) are expensive, but food is still pretty cheap. We paid about 30 Euros per meal for 2 of us, this usually included either a couple of soft drinks each or a vodka (!). Basic Greek food like moussaka, chicken fillet, stuffed peppers and souvlaki are all about 6-8 Euros with starters being about 4-5 Euros. Spiritby Carolinus - Halkidiki

Re: IOLI VILLAGE HOTEL - 12 years ago
We had friends stay there a couple of years ago and it was OK, but as SkiMad said, pretty basic. I think some rooms have been modernised so you would be best off booking (or requesting) one of those. It's in a good location (we have an apartment right opposite) - only 5 mins to the beach or the old square. On the sea view side of things, there aren't many hotels or apartments along the promenaby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Travellers Cheques - Sterling or Euro - 12 years ago
To be honest, I have always found that you get a better rate in resort, but only if you go to the bank or cashpoint. We tend to take cash out at the local ATMs using our bank cards, you do get a small bank fee but you still get more than if you change in the UK or at an exchange office in resort. Be careful, don't make the mistake of using credit cards to get cash - they charge HUGE fees! Iby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: PEFKOHRI HELP PLEASE!!!! - 12 years ago
I have seen signs for horse riding near Kriopigi / Kalithea but I'm afraid I don't know any details. On doing a quick Google search I found a company that offer riding for 35 Euros per hour - maybe worth contacting them to find out more details: Have a good holiday, we go about 4 days after you return - the countdown has started!by Carolinus - Halkidiki
UK tour operators to Hanioti & Pefkohori - 12 years ago
I've just posted this on the Halkidiki forum on Trip Advisor, and thought it might be useful on here too... As the UK operators seem to be reducing their hotels in this area, I thought I would see who offered what, and this is what I came up with: HANIOTI Ampelia - First Choice & Olympic Holidays Bella Grecia - First Choice, Thomson & Thomas Cook Daphne - Olympic Holidays Dionysby Carolinus - Halkidiki
Re: Pefkohori or Afitos? - 12 years ago
The 2 villages are very different, Afitos is much more 'traditional' with little cobbled streets and lovely views down to the beach. It is a pretty steep walk down to the beach and there are several nice tavernas on the way down. It would be quieter than Pefkohori in August. Pefkohori is on the level so no drop down to the beach, it is made up of 2 parallel roads and the old square. The main rby Carolinus - Halkidiki
